GRINDLAY, Ruth Louise (Houghton)   - On Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Hastings Centennial Manor, Bancroft.

Born October 5, 1922 in the east end of Toronto, Mom lived on the Danforth, the youngest of 3 children (sister Roberta and twin brother Tom) where her parents Bert and Ethel Houghton owned and operated J.H. Houghton Orthopaedic Shoe Makers for many years.

Ruth attended Wilkinson Public School and graduated from Riverdale Collegiate.

Ruth met her husband Donald, also from Toronto’s east end, in 1944.

They married the following year and spent the next 25 years at various army bases in Ontario. The family moved to Cherrywood on Donald’s retirement and finally settled in Ajax 1980.

Ruth had a generous heart and was committed to her family, community and church. She volunteered for a number of organizations including the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital’s “4477 Shop” in Pickering Village, and was recognized for over thirty years of service by the Province of Ontario in 2001.

She was an active member of her church and enjoyed serving on the Elderberry’s committee at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Ajax. Most of all, Mom enjoyed her friends and family. She loved to golf, curl, play bridge, watch Jeopardy and host her annual Canada Day parties.  Ruth was predeceased by Donald in 1998, son Raymond in 2009 and is survived by her daughter-in-law Dawn, and children David (Melanie),

Louise (Steve), Tom, and Charlie (Sam), ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada, Scotland and England. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Hers was a life well lived.

Visitation will take place at 1:00 pm at McEachnie Funeral Home, Ajax on Saturday June 1, 2019, followed by a celebration of life. Inurnment at a later date will follow.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ajax-Pickering Hospital Foundation or the CHARITY of your choice.
