Sciuk RichardSCIUK, Richard John Sciuk  -
Richard John Sciuk passed peacefully from this world in the early hours of May 3rd, 2024 following a brief illness in his ninety-fourth year.

Born to parents Jan Sciuk and Stella, predeceased by his brother, George Sciuk and Rose.

Richard (Dick) is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley and sons John (Marilyn), Robert (Karen) and Philip (Julie), 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Dick grew up on Olive Avenue in Oshawa, and attended Holy Cross and later O’Neil CVI where he excelled in various sports, and earned his collegiate letter.

Dick’s early years were spent helping his parents in their small grocery business, until he opened his own business which lead to the former Oshawa landmark, Provincial Tile on Simcoe Street South.

This evolved to become the Furniture Galleries on Champlain Avenue in Oshawa.

Youngest son Philip entered business with Dick after graduating from Trent University, and they became an inseparable team and respected stalwarts of the Oshawa business community.

Dick and Shirley met in grade 2 at Holy Cross, and some years later became constant dance partners at the Jubilee sock hops. They became engaged and then wed in story-book fashion in July of 1953.

As a well oiled team, Dick and Shirley raised three boys and ran a small business.

Their mutual love, work ethic, abiding faith and commitment to family and community were exemplary, and instilled in three generations of the family.

In addition to Dick’s work ethic, he excelled in various sports, including football, baseball, tennis, golf, skiing and boxing. Various sports page clippings referred to him as a “pint sized piece of dynamite” when describing his surprisingly frequent game winning home runs.

In addition to his skill with a bat, he regularly played third base and short stop on various community and varsity teams, including the Oshawa Orioles, and a Mills Motors junior Ontario championship team.

Dick knew what it took to win, and lead by example in every aspect of his life. He will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME  (124 King St. E., Oshawa).  A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Interment Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Lakeridge Health Foundation.

Online condolences may be shared at  armstrongfh.ca .
