MITCHELL, Susan Diane 'Sue' (Matheson) - (1962 - 2018) - Early in the morning on December 1st, 2018, we lost our wife, mom, and best friend to cancer.
Sue Mitchell was described by many as “Superwoman.” She was in charge of the CT department at Joseph Brant Hospital, where her efforts at building the best-run department possible were only exceeded by her devotion to patient care.
Sue baked the world’s best apple pie, and anyone who ever had it will tell you I am not exaggerating. She played basketball and was an outstanding catcher in baseball. She played hockey. She ran Around The Bay, Mud Runs, Triathlons, Half-Marathons, Full Marathons, and even a 50K Ultramarathon.
When she wasn’t pursuing athletics, she was coaching her son’s teams, and when she wasn’t doing that, she was working on her garden. True to her nature, Sue was a three-time Trillium Award winner. Inside the house, she installed a kitchen backsplash and hardwood flooring, and she had a decorator’s touch when it came to picking paint colours. Incredibly, she still had time to be a loving wife and the best mom anyone could ever hope for.
Sue was predeceased by her mother Ann Mitchell, and her mother in-law Norah Matheson, and she is survived by her husband Mike Matheson, her son John Matheson, father Doug Mitchell, sisters Barbara (Rick MacLellan), Sharon Newman (Dan Brennan), and Sheila (Bruce Smith.)
She was also a beloved sister-in-law to Loretta & Paul Kocsis and Colleen Matheson. Sue will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews Sarah Maclellan (Jon Leyland), Carson Leyland, Mark MacLellan, Ryan Newman, Claire Newman, Nick Smith, Paula Kocsis, Patrick Kocsis, Daniel Kocsis, Rachel Matheson-Green, Katie Matheson-Green, Jenine Matheson-Salim (Muzz Salim), Amahra Salim, and Mariah Salim.
We can’t count the number of friends, running group members, teammates, and fellow health care workers who already miss her beyond belief.
Visitation will be at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton on Wednesday December 5th from 2 to 4pm, and 6 to 9pm. Funeral will be at Bay Gardens on Thursday December 6th at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Joseph Brant Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
