Scolaro FortunatoSCOLARO, Fortunato – Passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on Thursday, March 16th, 2017 at the Welland Hospital at 86 years of age.

Beloved husband of Rita for 58 years. Loving father of Lorenzo (Sheila), Tony (Joanne), John (Anna), Cathy (Gaetano), Fortunato Jr. (Lynne). Survived by 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Dear brother of Maria (the late Simone) Catalfamo, Antonio (Stefania), Stefano (Patricia), Roberto (Debbie), brother in law of Elena. Predeceased by his parents Lorenzo and Antonina, in laws Antonino and Caterina Giudeo-LaRosa, and 5 siblings, Anna, Mimmo (Franca), Pippo, Mimma (Bartolemo) and Rosetta (Gino).

Fortunato will be loving remembered by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Born in Meri Sicily, he moved with his family to Canada in 1967. Fortunato worked at Ennis Steel, Port Robinson until his retirement. Having worked for Rodriguez Steel, before moving to Canada he proudly spoke of how he was involved in the construction of the first high-speed hydrofoil to cross the Strait of Messina.

Fortunato had many proud moments while in Canada. He was an active member of many organizations including Coro Folcoristico Italiano del Niagara, the Alpini Group, Casa Dante and a member of St Mary Parish serving as Vice President of the Feast of the Assumption, a member of St Anthony Society and a member of the Italian church choir. Especially proud of his involvement with Coro Folcoristico Italiano del Niagara, he was honoured to share songs important to his heritage everywhere they performed.

We wish to thank the Doctors and nursing staff at the Welland Hospital 6th floor, Doctors and staff at the Walker Family Clinic, especially Dr. Kouros who made his last days comfortable.

Relatives & friends may call at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence, 19 Young Street, Welland on Sunday, March 19th from 6 – 9 p.m. and Monday March 20th from 2 -4 and 6-8 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 2p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 21st at 9:30 a.m. Rite of committal to follow in Pleasantview Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Fortunato’s memory may be made to St. Mary Church or OneFoundation for Niagara Health – Welland Site.
