Turner BrianTURNER, J. Brian,  P. Eng., CEng MIMechE - With his family by his side, J. Brian Turner, age 92, of Peterborough, Ontario, passed away October 20, 2017 at Royal Gardens Retirement Residence.

Born September 9, 1925 in Southport, Lancashire, England, Brian emigrated to Canada in 1954, to work on the Avro Arrow before settling in Peterborough in 1959.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty (nee Brow), and children Malcolm (Barbara Black), Elisabeth (Peter Grasmanis) and Kathryn (Ed Witzke); grandchildren Claire and Anna Witzke; and brother Roger (Jill). Brian was predeceased by his sister Mildred Saunders.

Brian enjoyed a long career in the aviation and nuclear power industries including English Electric, Dowty Canada, Atomic Power Department of Canadian General Electric then teaching at Sir Sandford Fleming College.

John Wilson Baptiste Thirnbeck was born in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada on December 30, 1926. He married Barbara Jean Westran on February 10, 1948.

ETHIER, Laurie - (July 29, 1933 – October 19, 2017) - In her 84th year, Laurie passed away peacefully joining her husband of 65 years, Rolly.

Laurie was a loving and proud mother / mother-in-law to her 5 children, Nancy (Colin), Andy (Lynda), Steve (Carol), Ron (Mary) and Denise (Craig).

She was a devoted Grammie to her 5 grandchildren Danielle, Andrea, Kate, Kelly and Caiden and her only great-grandchild Brooklyn.

 

Boyle LeoBOYLE, Leo Patrick Grattan - Died as he lived: quietly, peacefully, and enveloped in the love of his family. Though his cancer was aggressive and the fight all too brief, his sense of humour, his gratitude, and his concern for others never once wavered.

For the entirety of his 63 years, Leo treated everyone with respect & kindness, even on his darkest of days. Not out of duty, but because it was woven into every fibre of his being. Regardless of his accomplishments, he was a humble man struck with awe and wonder, overwhelmed by the kindness of others and the beauty of the world.

He taught us many things: there is more value in listening than in speaking. Kindness doesn't cost you anything. Always say please & thank you. Play the cards you're dealt. Leo will be missed greatly; by his family, his friends, his colleagues, and anyone who ever had the blessing to encounter him.

Joan, the daughter of Mary and Fred Riley, was born June 12, 1939 in Peterborough. She will be missed by her husband Larry; and by her children Louise (Neil Snider), Steven, and David (Tammy Henderson), her grandchildren Benjamin, Meghan, and Kelsey, her sisters Marilyn Woodward, and Mary Theresa, and her many friends.

Joan graduated from the School of Nursing in Belleville in 1963. She had a career in several hospitals on a variety of floors.  She later studied psychiatry and prior to her retirement, finished her career as a well respected psychiatric nurse in Peterborough.

Nichols Wayne 2NICHOLS, Wayne Elwood – Wayne's family is deeply saddened by his death on October 16, 2017 at the age of 84.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Mann) and dearly loved father of Heather Curtin (Michael) and Ian (Shelly Hague). Proud Poppa of Colleen Curtin and Shaun, Jack and Abby Nichols.

Wayne was the son of the late Wallace and Emerita (Black) Nichols of Bridgenorth. He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald and Glenn.

 

Bain LauraBAIN, Laura Amy - Larua Amy Bain, (89), passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2017 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

She was born in Toronto, January 18, 1928 to Russian immigrants, Boris and Sonja Monsaroff. Her brother, Adolph was 16 years older and predeceased her in 2003. 

She was raised in Toronto, then Hamilton and met the love of her life, Jim Bain, at Westdale Collegiate. She then went on to graduate in Psychology from the University of Toronto in 1950.

She and Jim were married in 1951 and moved to Montreal where they both were employed by Canadair (now Bombardier).  Soon after they moved to Rosemere (north of Montreal), had their son, Bruce and all three made life long friends here.

Dear Husband of Shirley for almost 67 years. Loving father to David (Joan), Brenda (Francis), Doug (Patty), and Carol (Craig).

Loved Grandpa to James (Nicole) and Andrew, and “Pa” to Ashley (Arthur), Adam (Rhiannon), and Olivia. Proud Great-Grandpa to Calvin. He is also fondly remembered by his step-grand and great grandchildren.

Alan was, above all else, a dedicated engineer and worked at Westinghouse, Stelco, Northwestern Pulp and Paper, and General Electric, where he happily spent most of his career, retiring in 1993.
