MARSHALL, Margot Anne - The labour movement has lost a strong Sister with the passing over the Easter weekend of Margot Marshall, 68, of Peterborough.
She was the backbone of the Peterborough & District Labour Council, serving as its secretary for 14 years. Margot always worked behind the scenes, organizing Day of Mourning, the Labour Day picnic and the annual Labour Appreciation dinner, in addition to public meetings and rallies.
Her Peterborough working career started in 1977 at Alfa-Laval. In 1986 she went on to work at St. Joseph's Hospital and then moved to Peterborough Regional Health Centre when the hospitals merged. She retired from PRHC in 2013. She was active in her union - Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 345 serving as steward, treasurer, recording secretary and remained one of its delegates to the Labour Council until her passing.
Margot always loved to have fun and would regale co-workers and friends with stories of her adventures. Her humour led her to play tricks on friends as recently as April 1st (Fools) bringing tears of laughter in her newest adventure of getting married and sharing tattoos with a longtime friend!
She was the Vice Chair of the Festival of Trees and helped to organize other community events including Skate with the Pete's, Alumni hockey games and the Hip Hip Hooray Ortho Walk. Margot also served as a board member on United Way Peterborough, FourCAST, The Elizabeth Fry Society and the Employment Insurance Board of Referees.
She is survived by many friends both in and out of the labour movement. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Viola Morrison of Toronto; a son Michael and a daughter Nicole.
A Celebration of Life. Please join Margot’s many friends to celebrate her life and commitment to her community on Thursday, May 4 from 5 to 8 PM., with tributes at 6:30 PM, at the Peterborough Naval Association, 24 Whitlaw Street (Lansdowne and River Road).
