It is with profound sadness that we announce Ron’s death, in his 86th year, on March 8, 2018, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
He was the cherished and devoted husband of Evelyn (Taylor); he was her best friend for 63 years of marriage.
To his children, Cathy (Brian Basterfield) and Larry (Linda Lusty, predeceased) he was simply “the best”: a role model and a mentor, a friend and a champion.
He set the bar high and inspired them to make him proud.
He was the proud Poppa of Sara (Blair Anderson), Mark and David Basterfield, and Benjamin Trimble, who loved and admired him beyond measure.
His great-grandchildren Lachlan and Bronwen were the light of his life.
All who knew him appreciated Ron’s kindness, selflessness, integrity, and lively sense of humour.
He made everyone feel important.
He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by family, friends and acquaintances alike.
Ron loved nothing more than being with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking, creating with stained glass, camping, fishing, and playing games and cards.
In recent years Ron faced Macular Degeneration and workplace-acquired Asbestosis with dignity and determination.
Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the CNIB, the Canadian Lung Association, or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Comstock-Kay Life Celebration Centre. At Ron’s request no service will be held; we encourage you to celebrate Ron’s influence on your life in a way that you see fit.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Applewood Retirement Residence for supporting Ron and Evelyn for the last year, and to the staff of Peterborough Regional Health Centre (B4) for providing exceptional and compassionate care for Ron.
