Purdy CharlesPURDY, Charles Edward Montgomery Jr. - June 11, 1942 – October 5, 2018 - It is with sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Charles on October 5, 2018 at the age of 76.

Charles will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his sisters Katherine Susan Buckley (William) and Anne Grasty and their families as well as his many supportive friends.

Son of the late Charles Edward Montgomery Purdy and Marion Elizabeth (Risley) Purdy, Charles was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, and made Toronto his home.

Charles had a passion for reading and researching and used this extensive knowledge along with an unbridled commitment,  to enthusiastically advocate for justice and relief to those in need.

Charles’ many causes included women’s peace groups, University Women’s clubs, and some of his many volunteer roles included speaking and teaching to non-government sectors at the UN in New York City and mentoring and providing support to young and new immigrants.

Charles understood the social support system and its faults well and believed in community service to all. One of the founding members of the Fieldstone Co-op, Charles provided guidance to its members and was a well respected part of the co-op community.

The Church, specifically The Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Toronto), was Charles first love and he was thought of as the social consciousness of the parish. One of Charles greatest pleasures was the organ recitals which gave him both peace and joy.

Visitation will be held at The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, 477 Manning Avenue, Toronto, on Thursday, October 11th at 12 – 1pm, with the funeral services to celebrate his life to follow at 1pm.  A reception will then follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charles to The Church of St. Mary Magdalene’s Healey Willan organ fund, or their refugee support fund.
