ARTHEY, Lynda Jeanne (nee Smith) - After a courageous and defiant battle against cancer and Sjogren’s Syndrome, Lynda (72) passed away peacefully on November 8, 2018.

Lynda was born on April 30, 1946 in Brampton, Ontario and is predeceased by her parents, (John) Merle and Jean (McLeod) Smith.

She married John Arthey on June 18, 1966 at First Baptist Church in Brampton.

She worked as a hairstylist before she and John began expanding their family which eventually included adoption and fostering.

She felt called to help those in her local community marginalized by homelessness, addiction and mental health issues and spent many years providing meals, assistance and acceptance to those in need. Never one to seek attention, she was recognized for her commitment to helping others when the Province of Ontario honoured her with both the Good Citizens and Ontario Merit Award in 2001. In 2014, she was recognized as Brampton Citizen of the Year.

Lynda loved spending time with her family and friends, her dogs and her gardens. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John; her children, Lisa, Melinda (Tim), Shayne, Kari (Nekia), Aaron, Miles, Jennie (Chris), Matthew, Kim and her grandchildren, Laura, Christian, Justin, Caylin, Jelisa, Benjamin, Brooklyn, Gabriella and Jennifer.

She is also survived by her sisters, Lea (Alan) Daniel, Ellen Smith and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private funeral service will be held for family. A public celebration of Lynda’s life will be held at First Baptist Church, Brampton on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:00 am, lead by Sean Clue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Bethell Hospice would be appreciated.
