Weissenborn Profeessor GeprgeWEISSENBORN, Professor George Kurt  -  After a long and debilitating illness, Professor George Kurt Weissenborn passed away on November 2, 2018 in Guelph, ON.

Born on February 14, 1929 in Leipzig, Germany, George attained a translator's certificate before emigrating to Vancouver in 1951, where in 1955 he married Linda (nee Muller).

Graduating with a B.A from University of British Columbia in 1967, George accepted a full-time teaching position at Laurentian University that same year and moved his family to Sudbury.

In 1970, after he attained a Ph.D. at UBC, the family moved to Toronto, where at the University of Toronto, St. Michael's College, George taught German Language and Literature for 25 years.

He retired from University of Toronto as an associate professor in 1995, much-loved by his students and respected by faculty as a charismatic and provocative lecturer. George moved to Guelph in 1999.

Active for decades in the German - Canadian community he was a founding member and Vice President of the Historical Society of Mecklenburg Upper Canada and author of several works on German immigrants to this country.

Predeceased by his daughter Karin, George is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Evelyne, son Peter and his wife Johanna and their son Thomas (now in his third year at Royal Military College of Canada), son Michael and his wife Cathy Kozma.

Heartfelt thanks go out to the many staff of St. Joseph's Health Centre, Guelph, for tirelessly providing excellent care for George over these past eight years.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be a family service at his interment.

The family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
