Kemeny ElizabethKEMENY, Elizabeth - Known to friends and family lovingly as Betka, passed away in the night, on February 14, 2019, at her home in Thornhill.

Betka was born April 4, 1943 in Vàcduka, a small town in Hungary. Though she left Hungary to emigrate to Canada, she maintained a very close connection to her Hungarian family, who were beloved by her throughout her life. She leaves behind her brother Imre, nieces, nephews, and many grand- and great-nieces and nephews.

Alongside her Hungarian family, she endeared herself to her Canadian family, too. Betka married Andrew Kemeny in 1986, and became the beating heart of the Kemeny clan. She presided over all family get-togethers with great generosity and care, delicious Hungarian home cooking, and thoughtful gifts.

She had 26 devoted years of marriage to Andrew until his death in 2012, over which she also presided with the same devotion and love she had demonstrated throughout her life. She leaves behind loving step-daughters and relatives, Julie, Niki and Tyler, Maddy and Lily, Dave and Dushi, Karen and Gabe, and Zsuzsi.

Betka was hard working. She started her working life in Hungary at 14 while still in school. She continued working ceaselessly, while learning English and starting over in a new country, and even past retirement, right up until her death. As a bookkeeper, she took meticulous care in her work--as she did in all things--with diligence, precision, and fierce loyalty.

Betka was a devoted Catholic. She maintained a strong faith in God throughout her life, with an open heart that let in everyone of all faiths and circumstances. Her heart simply expanded to make more room for every new person she enfolded in her love. Visitation will be held at Elizabeth Kemeny, known to friends and family lovingly as Betka, passed away in the night, on February 14, 2019, at her home in Thornhill.

Visitation will be held at Highland Funeral Home, Scarborough on February 20th from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM followed by the service in the chapel.
