Da Costa BentoDA COSTA, Bento (Amorim) - After a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease, Benny passed away in the early morning on June 13, 2019, in his sleep surrounded by his loving family at the age of 87.

Benny leaves behind the love of his life, Maria Conceicao Da Costa, to whom he was married to for 61 years full of joy, laugher and love.

Benny also leaves behind his loving children Bernadette Da Costa Winberg (Jon Winberg) and Tony Da Costa, his cherished granddaughters Ashley Da Costa Winberg (Cliff Laidlaw) and Sara Da Costa Winberg (Stephen Case), and his adorable great-grandson, Fox Laidlaw, who always brought a smile to Benny’s face even when Benny’s health declined and he spoke few words.

Benny will be greatly missed by his loving sisters Joana Carvalho, Delmira Da Costa (David Da Costa) and Irodina De Medeiros (Manuel De Mederios), as well as his sister-in-laws Salome Ventura and Luiza Almeida, and his youngest bother-in-law, Jose Francisco Frizado (Conceicao Frizaso), whom Benny always thought of as his son.

In 1967 Benny and Maria Conceicao immigrated to Canada with their two children, one suitcase and $500. Benny and Maria were committed to building a better life for their family in Canada, and indeed they did. As a child Benny had to work to support his family in Portugal and as such, he had no formal education and was illiterate.

Benny took great pride in his children and grandchildren’s academic success, and would often boost to whomever would listen that one of his granddaughters was a teacher and the other was a lawyer.

Benny had a zest for life and was always the life of the party. He loved the Toronto Maple Leafs, to sing fado, travel with his family and tend to his beautiful garden, which was and still is famous in his neighborhood and even featured in local publications.

Please join us as in celebrating Benny’s wonderful life on Sunday, June 16, 2019 and on Monday, June 17, 2019, as detailed below. Visitation – Sunday June 16, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Cardinal Funeral Home, Toronto. Funeral and Entombment – Monday, June 17, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1037 Bloor Street West, Toronto, followed by an entombment.

In lieu of flowers, Benny’s family would greatly appreciate that donations to be made to Parkinson Canada.
