THOMPSON, Nadine (nee Swackhamer) - (1937 - 2020) - Nadine Thompson (nee Swackhamer) passed away peacefully on December 19, 2020, after a long, full life.
Although she could not have family by her side, she had a group video call with loved ones the day before she passed. She held on, just long enough, to see the faces of her family together once more.
Nadine was born and raised in Hamilton, where she grew up with her parents and her younger sister Joyce. As a young woman, she moved to Brampton to start her teaching career. Shortly after, she met her future husband Jim, while he was coaching the local hockey team that several of her students played for.
Jim and Nadine were married for 62 years, and raised two children, Terrie and Tim. Nadine taught piano lessons out of the family home for many years, and loved seeing her daughter and several grandchildren take up piano over the years.
Nadine always had an active social life, and had many groups of friends from different activities (Book Clubs, Bridge and Euchre Clubs, Probus, Condo friends).
For several years, Jim and Nadine enjoyed summers at their trailer in Trillium Woods with a large group of friends and visits from family. Nadine loved planning and hosting events; it’s clear that bringing people together with good food and good company is what she loved most. She always made an effort to stay connected with family and friends, and maintained strong bonds regardless of time or distance.
In her 83 years, she went through more than her fair share of health issues, and was endearingly called a “tough old bird” by one of her doctors. Her approach to overcoming each challenge was taking it “one day at a time”, a sentiment she often passed on to others. Her resilience and family values will be carried on by future generations.
She will be especially missed by all her grandchildren (Matthew, Amanda, Chris, Kaitie, Sydnie, Raechel, Mckenna, Spencer, and Seth) and her many friends.
Knowing Nadine, she would encourage everyone to navigate their grief, and the rest of the pandemic, one day at a time. Live Loved.
