Long WalterLONG, Walter Long - It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Walter Long, on Thursday, April 22nd, 2021, age 90.

Beloved husband of 62 years to the late Viola (Baldwin).

Much loved father of Irene (Randy) Rennick and David (Ingrid) Long.

Adored “Gramps'' to granddaughters Sarah and Michelle (Rennick) and grandson Aaron (Long.)

Dearly loved brother to Ruby Shorten, Harry Long, Blanche Pierce, Joyce Blennerhassett (predeceased), and Valetta Blennerhassett of Ireland; loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Walter grew up on the family farm in Adare, Co. Limerick, Ireland. He set out at the age of 17 to work in Pimms Hardware in Mountmellick. With a few years of experience under his belt and an adventuresome spirit, he left Ireland with 2 other young men, George Baldwin and George Tyner, to cross the ocean to Canada beginning a new life in Toronto, Ontario.

Feeling homesick, Walter began writing letters to Viola back in Ireland. He eventually got up the courage to mail
her an engagement ring, proposal and a ticket to sail to Canada. She accepted, they were married in Mimico, and together they settled into a new home in Maple where they lived happily for 54 years.

They were active members of the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church and the community of Maple. Soon after his arrival in Canada, Walter took the advice of his uncle and enrolled in plumbing trade school, apprenticing for a few years until he courageously started his own successful business, Walter Long Plumbing Ltd. He was a hard worker, diligently serving
many loyal customers well into his senior years.

Walter was passionate not only about his work, but also about his family, grandchildren and friends. He was full of life and fun, living his days to the full. Walter and Viola spent many years cottaging in Muskoka where he built his family cottage, and later enjoyed cottaging in the Kawarthas at his cousin Jim Long’s cottage.

Walter and Vi spent their final 7 years residing at Shepherd Village in Scarborough, ON where they enjoyed many new friendships, activities and happy times until Viola’s passing in 2019. Walter resided there for the remainder of his days and will be greatly missed by the staff and residents. His legacy is one of fun, smiles, generosity, service, and a life
well lived.
