Strachan DoreenSTRACHAN, Doreen - Doreen Strachan, age 95 passed away at her residence, Village of Humber Heights on April 28, 2021.

Doreen was born in Toronto on July 21, 1925, to parents Ernest and Florence Barker. She had two loving brothers Arthur (Art) and Ronald (Ron) and a beautiful sister Loraine who predeceased her at the young age of eleven.

Doreen married James (Jim) Strachan on September 25, 1948, and was happily married for over 25 years. They were blessed with 4 children.

She was a dedicated loving mother who treasured her family, always putting them above herself.

She was also a caring grandmother who loved spending time with her grandsons. Quality time at the cottage, special outings, school events or just taking care of them when they were sick.

In her younger days she spent time camping with her parents, brothers and family in Muskoka, giving her a love for the cottage life. She loved going dancing with friends to the Big Bands before she had her family and prided herself on being a great jitter bugger in her day.

Throughout her life her friendly personality gave her the gift of making many friendships, and she always lent her support to those who needed it. She enjoyed spending time with family or friends with a good cup of tea and of course an endless supply of cookies or chocolates.

Doreen had many hobbies; she loved playing bridge with friends. She took up painting after retiring from the TDSB and proudly displayed her artwork in her home and cottage. She was a talented sewer, making clothes for herself and her daughters. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and lent those skills as a volunteer knitter for the Humber River Hospital charity bazaars. She dedicated over 15 years as a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society. She loved reading books and doing crossword puzzles. Her thirst for knowledge made her the Jeopardy champion in her household. Only her son could match or beat her in a Scrabble game.

Her home was always the gathering place for special holiday celebrations, birthdays and the annual Super Bowl event.

Doreen was happiest when she was spending time at her cottage on Georgian Bay. Anyone who knew her knew that was her “happy place”, soaking up the sun, reading books on the screened in porch and gazing out at the sparkling water. Her time at the cottage rejuvenated her soul and brought her the greatest joy.

She will be sadly missed by family and friends, and forever remembered in the hearts of her children: Jim, Lori, Beth and Vicky, grandsons; Matt (Kim), Eric (Samantha), Alex (Dorene), Adam and daughter-in-law Linda.

A special thank you goes out to the staff at Village of Humber Heights for the exceptional care Doreen received while she was there.

May she Rest In Peace.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2021 at Prospect Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted with Scott funeral home, West Toronto chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the Strachan Family has requested for donations to be made in memory of Doreen to the Heart & Stroke Foundation as well as the Canadian Cancer Society.

We ask that you keep Doreen and the family in your thoughts and prayers.
