ZHANG, Dr. Xiaoge “Gregory” - Loving husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully in Toronto on August 6, 2021 at age 64.
Greg is survived by his wife Li Zhang, and his son Kevin Zhang.
Greg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and after battling with the cancer successfully for years, there were some painful recurrences in the past few months.
Greg decided to leave this world on his own terms with the assistance of his doctor and the Toronto MAiDHouse organization.
His loving family was with him at St Matthew United Church.
Greg was a renowned scientist, philosopher, successful entrepreneur, author, world traveler, painter, and most importantly a great man who loved his family and friends, and were loved by all in return.
Greg was born in Jinhua, Zhenjiang Province in China in 1956, and grew up there until he left the province for his undergraduate studies at Beihang University in Beijing. He was then selected to be among the first group of Chinese students to study abroad in Belgium in 1982, aged 26.
After getting his PhD, he first held post-doctoral positions at MIT and Columbia University, and later joined Teck Resources in Toronto as senior scientist. In 2012 he started his own company e-Zinc, a pioneer in long-duration energy storage that has won millions of dollars in venture capital and government funding.
An open visitation will be from 10:30-12:00 on August 20th, 2021 at Lynett Funeral Home, Toronto. A memorial service to celebrate Greg’s life and achievements will be held from 12:00-1:30. Please do not send flowers/baskets.
