SCHAPIRA, Judith L. (JUDY)   -  May 31, 1930 - December 11, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Judith Schapira.

Judy was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Ada Schoen, her brother, Edward B. Schoen (Monique), all of New York City, and by her husband, Henry Schapira, with whom she shared a relationship that was inspiring in terms of the love and the joy they found in each other.

She is survived by her children, Bill Abelson (Janyce) and Jan Abelson and her adored grandchildren Zoe Abelson and Ari Abelson.

Judy was a woman of quality in every sense. She was a respected psychologist and the modest recipient of many awards. She served for many years as the Chief Psychologist of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.

At the age of 65, in accordance with the laws of the time, she faced forced retirement and established a private consulting practice from which she finally retired at the age of 85.

During all these busy times family remained her top priority and she was always an available, loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother.

One of the things we always admired in our mother was the number of close friends of all ages that she had. Judy was always active and involved - heading off to the Shaw Festival, the Opera, art exhibitions, playing bridge, travelling or just chatting and laughing together. She truly was a lifelong learner - taking online courses until days before her medically assisted death.

Along with being a serious and dedicated person, Judy had a wicked sense of humour as well as a great laugh. So, despite the fact that we are incredibly sad now, thoughts of our mom will always bring a smile to our faces.
