Stewart RoderickSTEWART, Roderick Roderick Julian Stewart  - Author, teacher and historian, passed away peacefully in his home in Richmond Hill, Ontario on March 8, 2018.

He was 83.

He wrote several important books on Norman Bethune, of which Phoenix, The Life of Norman Bethune, co-written with his wife Sharon Stewart and Bethune in Spain, co-written with Jesús Majada, were his most recent works.

He was in the process of being interviewed for a documentary and a feature film on Bethune in the final months of his illness.

In addition to his work on Bethune, he wrote a biography of Wilfrid Laurier and several high school history textbooks. He also edited books for major Canadian educational publishers and taught high school history for many years.

He leaves Sharon, his wife of thirty-five years and his five children, Brenda (Martin), Tracy (Mahfoud), Kim (Mark), Derek (Rosa) and Denise (Francis), as well as thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. While researching and writing his earlier books on Bethune, he lived with his family in Mexico and worked as a Teacher and Journalist in China in 1979 and 1983. He also taught in Spain and travelled widely with Sharon.

A memorial service is not planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada are encouraged.
