SZKILNYK (LÕBU), Helvi Helene - July 19, 1926 - March 10, 2018
Helvi Helene Szkilnyk (nee Laiger, formerly Lõbu) passed peacefully on March 10, 2018 in Toronto.
Born to Juhannes Albert and Aline (nee Pinberg), on the north coast of Estonia, Helvi lived in Kaberneeme and Tallinn until 1944.
In the midst of WWII, her mother gave up their fishing boat so that Helvi could escape to Sweden, where she met her first husband Bernald Lõbu.
Arriving at Pier 21 in 1950, she resettled in Toronto, remarrying Bohdan Szkilnyk in 1970. Helvi's love of music was central to family gatherings. She shared her warm smile freely and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her two children Taivi Lõbu (Garth Douglas) and Tarmo Lõbu (Alison McConnell), as well as her twin granddaughters Chlöe Triin and Paige Helene.
A memorial celebration will be held Monday, March 19th at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. visitation), York Funeral Centre, North York.
