SUBOTICH, Vida (nee UCIN) - Vida, 90 years old, of Mississauga, Ontario, passed away on May 8, 2018, at Dom Lipa Nursing and Independent Retirement Home, in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Vida was born in Barka, Slovenia on September 15, 1927, the youngest of five girls born to Ivan and Marija Ucin.
After living through World War Two, the death of her mother Marija in 1943 and the rise and consolidation of the Communist government of Tito, Vida decided to illegally cross the border into Italy, alone and made it to a refugee camp where she eventually found passage on a ship to Canada.
Vida married Zvonimir Subotich on October 31, 1953, in Toronto, Ontario.
They were married 58 years. Vida spoke four languages and after her children were raised, she worked at Safeco Insurance, handling files in her fourth language while taking only a single sick day in thirteen years.
Vida is survived by her four sons and their spouses, Gord and Sherry, Leo and Chris, John and Nicole and Edi and Emily. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Sasha, Samantha, Rosey, Chadwick, Alex, Mason, and Caleb. Vida is preceded in death by Zvonimir in 2011 and her four older sisters, Marija, Nada, Paulina, and Natalja. She will be missed by all who knew her including friends and family from around the world.
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2018, from 1- 4 p.m., at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Dom Lipa, 52 Neilson Drive, Etobicoke, M9C 1V7.
The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Dom Lipa for the high level of care they provided to Vida since January 2015.
