Sargeant MeropiSARGEANT, Meropi 'Mitzi' Sargeant  -  It is with profound sadness that I announce that Mum died on Saturday, September 3rd, 2016. After a mild stroke on August 23rd that affected her speech and awareness, she rallied for a few days and then ran out of steam. Up until her stroke, everyone was amazed at her engagement and her memory. Not a small feat for someone who would be celebrating her 98th birthday on November 1st.

Mum was born in 1918 in Nicosia, Cyprus where she spent her early years until she met Jack, the love of her life, in 1937.  He was stationed there and swept her off her feet. They married the following year and she left to live in London, UK leaving everything she knew behind.

For the next twenty nine years, the family stayed until they picked up stakes for a new adventure in Canada.

Left to mourn her passing is her daughter, Linda Hacker (Karl) and her son-in-law, Jake De Jong; grandchildren and their partners, Jayne Davies (Belgium), Sharon Davies (Texas), Stephen Perry (Toronto), Simon Hacker (Myanmar), Christopher Hacker (Golden, BC); and nine great-grandchildren.  She also leaves her niece in the UK, Athena Pericleous and her family.

She was predeceased by her hubby, Jack (2000); daughters, Evelyn Davies (2010 in Moffat); and Jeannette De Jong (2016 in Simcoe); and son-in-law, Colin Davies (2015).

The family wants to thank Terrace on the Square for the love and kindness they shared with Mum during the time she lived there.  We also want to thank the staff of Grand River Hospital 5D North Stroke for their dedication.

Friends will be received at Erb & Good Family funeral home, Waterloo, on Thursday, September 8 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. The funeral service will follow at Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul, 527 Bridgeport Rd., Kitchener at 12 noon with Rev. Konstantinos Chatzis officiating.

Memorial donations to Innisfree House (Hospice) may be made.
