Engyel JuliusENGYEL, Julius "Gyula"  - September 12, 1923 – January 23, 2018

He was the original "World's Most Interesting Man."

Born and raised in Dunaföldvár, Hungary on September 12, 1923, he apprenticed as a Printer and Bookbinder and when the time came, served with the Hungarian Army (Magyar Királyi Honvédség) in WWII.

Following the war, he and some friends decided to leave Hungary, walking across Europe in order to avoid any potential entanglements with occupying Soviet forces.

Arriving in France, he learned French and settled in Paris before embarking to Canada and arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax.

After a brief stay in Montreal, he went north, working as a Lumberjack and as a Miner in Northern Ontario and Yukon Territory.

He still managed to maintain his French language skills despite living in Toronto.

In Toronto, he returned to his trade working with several printing firms in the Toronto area while being a successful entrepreneur and served with the Canadian Forces Reserves / 42nd Medium Artillery Regiment, Toronto. He loved a good party, had an uproarious laugh and an excellent sense of humour with some occasionally blue content, managing to make people blush with ease. He enjoyed fine dining and was equally appreciative of a backyard BBQ.

He was a voracious reader of history and literature, accumulating a library that would be the envy of any scholar. An opera lover, he could often be heard whistling the Toreador Song from Bizet's "Carmen." Like every other European gentlemen, when the FIFA world Cup Tournament was being played, there was always time to catch the games.

Being a big ham, his best performance was at Christmastime where he played St. Nickolas for the children at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Toronto. He also considered himself a connoisseur of fine rum, with his recent favourite being Fortress Rum from Cape Breton, N.S. and he loved ice cream. He is survived by his wife Terezia (Kelemen), sons Jules and Steve (Sylvie Larocque), grandson Nikolas and granddaughter Mackenzie.

Our thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Toronto General Hospital Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

Visitation at R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge St., Toronto, Monday, January 29, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 and 8 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 432 Sheppard Ave. East, Toronto, 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 30th. Interment to follow at York Cemetery, 160 Beecroft Road, with reception to follow at the York Cemetery Funeral Centre.
