O'ROURKE, Breid Mary (nee Conlon) O'Rourke, RN - Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the age of 95.
She is reunited with the love of her life, Steve, who passed away August, 2019.
Breid is survived by her children, William (Janice), Patrick (Theresa), John (Catherine), Kit (Randall); grandchildren, Patrick (Kelly), Liam, Sean (Jaclyn), Caitlin (Grant), Eamonn (Catherine), Rosie (Brandon), Maggie, Eden, Austin, Ella, Maddie; and great grandchildren Tiernan (TT), Maeve and Stevie.
She is also mourned by her surviving brother in Belfast, Noel and many nieces and nephews around the world. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she was one of 14 children and an identical twin.
Along with a few of her sisters, Breid attended the Cross and Passion boarding school in picturesque Ballycastle, County Antrim. She studied nursing at Jervis Street Hospital in Dublin.
After receiving her RN certificate, she trained in midwifery at The Rotunda in Dublin, Ireland. Travelling to Canada by ship, Breid continued her nursing career at the General Hospital in Port Arthur/The Lakehead. After Steve and Breid were married in 1954, Breid worked at Sunnybrook Hospital.
While managing their busy household, and raising their family in Don Mills, Breid enhanced her nursing skills focusing on geriatrics and taking the position of Charge Nurse for over 23 years at Thompson House in Don Mills.
Breid and Steve were also founding members of St. Bonaventure's Parish.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles - Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8th. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bonaventure's Church, 1300 Leslie Street, Toronto, on Friday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m.
A private burial will take place at a later date.
