Oleksander Chartchenko

February 1, 1930 - November 26, 2024

It is with profound sadness that the family of Oleksander "Sashko" Chartchenko announces his peaceful passing on November 26, 2024, at the age of 94. Surrounded by his loving family, Oleksander left a legacy of resilience, dedication, and service.

Born on February 1, 1930, in the village of Krasnopill in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, Oleksander’s early life was marked by challenges. His family endured political persecution, the Holodomor, and war, finding refuge in a displaced persons camp in Germany. After emigrating to Canada in 1951, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, Oleksander pursued a life of education, family, and community service.

Oleksander earned degrees from Ryerson Institute of Technology, the University of Toronto, and the University of Waterloo. His career included working at General Motors, entrepreneurship, and journalism as a broadcaster for CBC Radio Canada International. He was a devoted husband to Luba Chudiak and a loving father to Vera Sokolowski (the late Leo) and Borys Chartchenko (Lydia Ruzycky). He was a proud grandfather to Alexander Sokolowski, Sophia Sokolowski, Alexa Chartchenko, and Maksym Chartchenko, and a caring great-grandfather to Leo and Zoya Maillet-Sokolowski.

Oleksander was deeply committed to the Ukrainian-Canadian community, serving in leadership roles with ODUM, Ivan Franko Homes, Slovo, the Association of Ukrainian Journalists, and St. Volodymyr Cathedral. His passions included chess, photography, literature, and the beauty of intellectual pursuits. His life journey from Ukraine to Canada stands as a testament to his resilience and dedication.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Panakhyda service at 7:00 PM, at Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. West. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM at All Saints of Ukraine Chapel, 1280 Dundas St. West, followed by interment at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unite With Ukraine or a charity of your choice.

May his memory be eternal. Царство Небесне і Вічна Йому Пам’ять.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Turner & Porter Funeral Directors.
