IVKOVIC, Dr. Jovan - (1926-2018) - Passed away peacefully on October 23, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Smederevska Palanka (Serbia) on May 3, 1926 and was the youngest of four children. At the age of 17, he was drafted for military service for World War II. One of only a few survivors from his division, he decided to pursue his dream of studying medicine, which he completed in 1953.
Two years later, he married the love of his life, Dobrila (1931-1987), an English teacher.
After practicing medicine for several years, he went on to become a general surgeon. In 1987, he retired as a Colonel in the army and as Chief Executive Officer of Health and Welfare of the Yugoslavian army.
In his past time, he enjoyed spending time playing chess, including being a champion chess player in his university days. He also liked spending time doing needle points. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his two children, Divna and Pedja, and five grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will take place on Sunday, October 28th from 12pm – 3pm at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, Toronto.
