She was a talented woman, especially skilled in needlecrafts, and also a professional businesswoman—working as a tax consultant and owning a jewellery store. Most importantly, she was the greatest Mom and Oma her family could ever ask for.
Those who knew her knew her love for flowers and her commitment to Club Loreley, where she and her family were long-time members. If you ever found yourself on the receiving end of one of Ian Rogers’ famously long stories, you knew you were in the presence of a man who had lived fully and loved deeply. A storyteller, a protector, a man with a heart as big as his bear hugs—Ian passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, at the age of 77.
While we are grateful that he has found peace after his battle with Alzheimer’s, we will miss him dearly—especially his big smile, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family.
Born in Oxford, Nova Scotia, to Sheldon and Margaret Rogers, Ian’s adventurous spirit took root early. He began his career with the Canadian Coast Guard, where he crossed the Arctic Circle, and later joined the RCMP at just 20 years old. Over nearly 30 years, Ian served in many divisions, from drug enforcement and immigration to federal policing and marine patrol on Lake Ontario. His service earned him the RCMP Long Service Medal—an honour reflecting his dedication and pride in serving Canada.
Beyond duty, Ian found joy in the little and big things. Post-retirement, he could often be found at Winchester Golf Course in Oshawa, rain or shine, with clubs in hand and a smile on his face. He loved nature, fishing trips, family cottages, and road trips to the East Coast. A lifelong enthusiast of trains, boats, and planes, he maintained a childlike wonder for all things mechanical.
A voracious reader, Ian's home was filled with books on history, adventure, and fantasy—his passion for Tolkien's world of dragons was legendary. He was endlessly proud that his son carried on the love of storytelling as an author.
Ian is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Millar-Rogers; his children, David Ian Hamilton Rogers (Kathryn Verhulst-Rogers) and Jennifer Margaret Anne Rogers; and his brothers, Lorne and Bradley Rogers. A quiet dog-whisperer, Ian was adored by neighborhood pets and held a deep affection for his loyal dog Molly and many cherished cats over the years.
Ian Rogers was a man of kindness, humour, and strength. Though he is no longer with us, his long, rambling stories—rich with life, love, and laughter—will live on in every heart he touched.
With broken hearts, we share that Ursula Viney has peacefully passed away, taking her place beside our Heavenly Father. She left this world with her beloved by her side, hand in hand, as she took her final breath.
Ursula courageously battled brain cancer for nearly three years. Through it all, she remained full of grace, positivity, and strength. Her radiant smile never faded, and her unwavering spirit was a beacon to all who knew her. She was a beautiful wife, walking not in front or behind, but always side by side with her partner of nearly 27 years.
A devoted mother to four children and “Oma” to eight grandchildren, Ursula was a loving family woman, a vibrant and caring coworker, and a loyal friend. Her kindness, humor, and deep compassion for others will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Her family takes comfort knowing that her suffering is over, and she has found peace and eternal life. She touched countless lives with her warmth and positivity and leaves behind a legacy of love.
A Funeral Service will be held at Low and Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach Street, Port Perry, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a cause dear to Ursula’s heart — the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society. Ursula loved animals deeply and would be forever grateful for any support made in her memory.
We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Nancy Ethel Profenna, at the age of 98, following a long struggle with dementia.
Nancy was a devoted wife to Victor (predeceased 1998), loving mother to Judith, Janet (Peter), and Stephen; cherished Grams to Kristen and Kyle; and Great Grams to Remy, Barrett, and Brayden. She is also survived by many relatives in her native Wales.
Born in Wales, Nancy came to Canada as a war bride, arriving in Halifax before settling with her husband in Montreal, where they raised their family before relocating to Toronto. Her life was centered around family, friends, and community.
Nancy had a passion for entertaining and cooking, always creating a warm and welcoming home. She enjoyed the challenge of Duplicate Bridge, found joy in painting, and was an avid world traveler, especially fond of cruises.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Age Care Samac for their exceptional care and kindness.
A private Celebration of Life will be held later this Spring to honour Nancy’s long and meaningful life.
Born in Whitby, Bernice was the third of five children—Warren, Madeline, Bernice, Lorraine and Lloyd—who grew up on Perry Street during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
During WWII, Bernice worked at the Ajax munition factory. Shortly after the war’s end, she met her own war hero when Alex Bishop returned home from Europe. Their love story began when Alex spotted Bernice in a downtown Whitby restaurant while working in the area installing electrical infrastructure.
Married in early 1947, Bernice and Alex built their life together and eventually purchased a home on Lee Avenue in Whitby. There, they raised four daughters: Jennifer, Lorna, Brenda, and Valerie. Bernice was a devoted mother and homemaker, who also enjoyed baking—especially her beloved apple pies. Her large vegetable garden produced pickled beets and homemade chili sauce for year-round use. She filled her home with vibrant flowers and warmth.
As her children grew and started their own families, Bernice embraced new joys. She and Alex regularly walked through Lynde Shores Conservation Area, enjoying nature and feeding the birds. After Alex passed in 2006, Bernice found comfort in the company of her “Mall Friends,” walking the Oshawa Centre and spending hours in conversation at the food court.
Known for her charming expressions—“Feel like a nickel,” “Full as a little red wagon,” and “Full as a tick”—Bernice brought smiles wherever she went. She was happiest when surrounded by family. Her home was filled with photos of her loved ones, and her grandchildren affectionately called her “Pocket Gran” for her big personality in a small frame.
Bernice’s legacy lives on through her 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, each a source of great pride and joy in her life.
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 24, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Oshawa Funeral Home, 847 King Street West, Oshawa. Karen Elaine Steele McGaffey, daughter of Fred and Audrey Steele, wife to Kevin McGaffey, loving mother to Sean, Brendan (Sakina McGaffey) and Tanner (Becky McGaffey), and sister to David Steele (Sonya Steele), passed peacefully at home with family at her side on the first day of Spring 2025.
Karen lived a full and passionate life, despite it being prematurely shortened by cancer. From growing up all over Ontario and the waters of Georgian Bay to California as the family business moved, she excelled in her studies and formed lifelong friendships wherever she went. A lifelong lover of the sciences, Karen was inquisitive, intellectual, meticulous and passionate about education—traits she instilled in her own children and her many students as a high-school chemistry and earth sciences teacher later in her career.
She was a force to be reckoned with, never wavering in her dedication to her family and friends to whom she gave so much. She loved dogs, puzzles and knitting, at points turning the living room into a blanket and hat factory in-between competing in the daily Wordle and Crosswords and while throwing tennis balls for her treasured “Tollers” Piper and later Stryker. She enjoyed the outdoors, organizing numerous family canoe and camping trips and had the opportunity to visit natural wonders all over Canada and beyond. She could turn any experience into a learning opportunity, making use of early morning beach walks as well-disguised lessons on oceanography and geology.
She also knew how to throw a party or two, with the yearly McGaffey Christmas parties (employing her young children as bartenders) and the many days leading-into-nights on her beloved Anna Maria Island warmly cherished. To the very end Karen was a natural born leader and obsessive organizer, always able to take charge of any situation and arranging and hosting an entire baby shower from a hospital bed in the last weeks of her life.
Her presence (and banana chocolate chip muffins) will be profoundly missed but lovingly and passionately remembered always by her family and the many, many friends she made throughout her life. Her tremendous courage and fighting spirit in the face of so much adversity inspired all who she met and will live on in all who had the pleasure of witnessing it.
The family would like to recognize and thank Karen’s dedicated and caring team of doctors, nurses and staff in the Lakeridge Health System for their support, expertise and professionalism—a cure may have never been in the cards, but she, her family and friends were given the gifts of time and comfort through their endless efforts.
Visitation will be held at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Whitby on Saturday, March 29th, from 10:00 am until 12:00 Noon. A memorial service will follow immediately in the Barnes Chapel, with a reception to follow.
Donations in memory of Karen are being accepted for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home.
