KITCHEN, Phyllis Kitchen - (August 3, 1922 - July 17, 2019 Oshawa, Ontario)
On July 17, 2019, Phyllis Kitchen said farewell to this world in her 97th year.
She leaves to her family and friends a remarkable life.
Phyllis’s greatest and happiest achievement was her family. She married the love of her life, Victor Kitchen, and together they shared 50 years of joy and love.
They created a family that came to include Paula, Daniel (Lea Cawker), and Debbie (Joe Clark).
Over time, Phyllis and Vic were surrounded and delighted by their grandchildren, Greg (Tabitha), Jana (Melissa), Jessica (Tim), Whitney (Jason), Joey and Emma. She was the great-grandmother of Poppy, Harlow and North, as well as soon-to be-born baby-girl Masiewich.
She was the daughter of the late Mary and Albert Twaites and sister of the late George and Kenneth Twaites.
Phyllis was born in Oshawa on August 3, 1922 where she lived her entire life. Growing up, Phyllis attended Central Collegiate and OCVI where she developed friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime.
She went on to Ontario Business College where she became trained as a legal secretary. While she dedicated many years of her life to raising her family, Phyllis always kept her hand in her career and returned to full time work at Marks & McNeely Law Firm in her fifties.
Although she never considered herself a star athlete, she loved hockey and could talk hockey stats with the best of sports commentators. She could play bridge with the pros, and often win, hands down.
Phyllis grew up in the shadow of World War II and watched both of her brothers as well as countless friends leave family and home to defend Canada. This shaped her life and caused her to hold dear, above all else, the importance of building and maintaining relationships with the people she loved.
After the war, Phyllis built a loving life with her fiancé and then husband, Vic Kitchen. Together they danced at ‘The Jubilee’ every chance they got, supported their community through church and created a new chapter of life together at Lake of Bays where their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren came to know and love nature, precious family gatherings and, of course, endless fishing! She loved life at the cottage, spending time on the dock, walking the cottage road, taking countless trips into Dorset to putter in the shops, a boat ride and, always, an ice-cream cone.
Phyllis was a true people-person who gave joy to all who knew her. She lived a great life that was made even richer by her own unique gift of reaching out to people with kindness, generosity, and a genuine interest in others. She needed little else but friendship and love to be complete.
She left the world quietly and peacefully when she could no longer reach out and felt the gentle call of the Lord to go into his care. Among her last acts of love was to sing happy birthday to her daughter, Paula.
She will be missed by all who knew the magic touch of her love.
Visitation and a service to celebrate the life of Phyllis will be held on Wednesday, July 24th at Kingsview United Church, 505 Adelaide Ave E, Oshawa, ON L1G 2A4
11:00 am - Visitation in Sanctuary
12:00 noon - Celebration of Life Service
1:00 pm - Reception in Church Social Hall
Private Interment to follow.
