McBain EvelynMcBAIN, Evelyn (née Barraball) - (March 4, 1922April 26, 2020)

It is with profound sadness that the family of Evelyn McBain announces her passing, due to complications of Covid-19, on April 26th, 2020 at the Orchard Villa Long Term Care Home.

She was born on March 4th, 1922 and had just recently celebrated her 98th birthday.

She was born in Darlington Township, the 7th of 9 children to Luther and Cora (née Tucker).

She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses: Roy (Frankie), Bill (Eileen), Margaret (John), Marion (Russ), Sid (Laverne “Toots”), Gordon (Frances), Bob (Margaret) and Wally (Reta).

Evelyn and Eldon Essery were married in 1940, settled on the Essery family farm where they both worked very hard, while raising their 3 children. Eldon passed away suddenly in 1984.

Evelyn is a cherished mother to Art Essery (Sue), Scott Essery (Karen) and Marion Mills.

Loving and proud grandmother to: Dan (Erin), Darin (Becky), Tammy (Shawn), Alex (Matt), Lee Ann, Cathy, Scott, Kim (Rich) and Mandy (Phil).  “Grandma Evie” has 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren!

Most recently, Evelyn was the beloved wife of the late Malcolm (Scotty) McBain (“Grampa Scotty”) for 12 years. Theirs was truly the story of meeting the “love of their lives” at age 79. Scotty passed away in 2012.

Evelyn will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family and many, many friends.

She had an awesome work ethic and nurturing manner, which served her well in her long career in nursing.  She sang in the choir at Courtice United Church and then at Faith United for many years, from 1948 onward. She was an accomplished card player, formidable at euchre! Bowling and Blue Jays’ baseball were also favourite social activities.

She supported her family and friends with a fierce, “take action” kind of loyalty, always offering help in her gracious way.

Her home for the last 3.5 years was Orchard Villa Long Term Care. Our family thanks the staff, volunteers and even other residents who provided care, and importantly, acknowledged our mother/grandmother with dignity.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the COURTICE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1587 Durham Regional Highway 2, in Courtice, L1E 2R7.

There will be a Celebration of Life once restrictions for Covid-19 have been lifted, and interment will be at the Orono Cemetery, at a later date, where she will rest with her parents.

If you would like to make a donation in Evelyn’s memory, please do so at the  CHARITY of your choice.
