BERNHARDT, John Philip William Bernhardt   - January 22, 1929 to May 16, 2020

From the home that he loved, with his beloved wife Ruby at his side, John passed on peacefully, without pain, to his heavenly home.

His family and friends grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

On a Montreal mid-winter day on the 22nd of January, 1929, John entered this world, born the second child to Hans Bernhardt and Alice LeBrocq, immigrants to Canada from Germany and Jersey.

On a Bolsover spring day, on the 16th of May, 2020, John left behind his earthly body – which served him, his Lord and us so well – and now he is at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)

After an adventurous childhood and youth, at age 23, John went on to marry Ruby, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Langston. Ruby played a trumpet in the orchestra at the church they both attended.

She had caught John’s eye and stolen his heart, so he promptly took up the trumpet and joined the orchestra in order to sit beside her and win her heart. As they say, the rest is history.  John and Ruby had three children: Barry, Karen and Brian. These three were responsible for adding to John’s family, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren (so far!) To Barry and Rita (Raymer) were born Jennifer, Lindsey, and Christen. To Karen and Allan MacInnes, Nathan and Krista were born. Brian and Marianna (Kinnari) brought Brandon and Katie into the world. As for the great-grandkids: Jennifer and Dwayne Venema added Hendrik, Riley, Abby, Emma and Judah; Lindsey and Micah Gallant brought Arden, Jack and Ivy; and Christen and Andrew Turner added Kieran and Julian.

Three more joined the family when Nathan married Alyssa Gangai; Krista wedded Matthew Bishop; and Katie married Russell Porter.  John had an older sister, Alice Ruth Conover (deceased), who brought into John’s life two nephews and a niece: Mark, Tom, and Beth (deceased). He also had a very special sister-in-law, Pearl Emo – “Auntie Pearl” to the rest of the family.

Everyone in this family of John’s, loved him, looked up to him, and felt loved, treasured, and blessed by him. John has always given the credit to our Heavenly Father who has been gracious and faithful to us as a family.

John had a heart for God and for doing God’s work. Throughout his life, he played an active role in his church family, whether in his local church, or the national and international church. This work for the Lord included serving on deacon boards, building committees, and being a favourite Sunday School teacher.

These churches included Verdun Pentecostal Church in Montreal; Bethany Pentecostal Church in Saint John, New Brunswick; Agincourt Pentecostal Church in Toronto; and most recently, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Bolsover, Ontario, the home of his ‘retirement’.

A private family interment service will be held in Bolsover on Wednesday, May 20th. Celebration of Life services will take place in Toronto as well as Bolsover when the COVID situation permits.

The family is grateful for all your prayers, care and support, past and present.
