KIRWAN, John Michael - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John (Jack) Michael Kirwan on May 5, 2021 at the age of 88.
Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Irene, and his children, Michael (Lily), Lisa (John), Geoffrey (Leann), and Laura-Lee.
Jack will be fondly remembered by his six grandchildren, Courtney, Irina, Lauren, Taylor, William and Holly. Jack was predeceased by his brothers Sherwood and Bryan.
Jack was born in Melville, SK where his father worked as a dispatcher at the CN Rail. The family was stationed in Kamloops, BC where Jack distinguished himself as an excellent hockey and lacrosse player.
Later he worked at the Canadian Petroleum Association in Regina, SK where he met his future wife Irene. They married in Edmonton, briefly moved to Fort Nelson, BC and then on a whim moved to Toronto with their life savings of $900.
Jack and Irene lived in Markham, ON these past fifty-years, where they raised their four children.
Jack was an ardent reader and could weave politics, philosophy, current events, and ancient history into the same conversation. He had a quick wit, a clever mind, and was always up for a spirited debate.
A private family funeral service in memory of Jack will be held on Friday, May 7, 2021.
Remembrances may be made to the Toronto Public Library or to the charity of your choice.
