Balogh BarbaraBALOGH, Barbara Ann   -

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Balogh (nee Mullen), in her 75th year, her beloved daughters by her side, on March 11, 2022.

Barb’s final journey began almost a year ago to the day, on March 13, 2021, with an ambulance ride and emergency life-saving surgery related to Crohn’s disease.

She persevered through multiple surgeries, hospital stays, procedures, treatments, complications and setbacks throughout the course of the year.

In true Barb fashion, she demonstrated grace and resilience all the while maintaining a positive outlook and her keen sense of humour.

Loving and devoted mother to Stephanie and Jennifer. Predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years (Louis), her parents (William Stanley and Margaret), and her brother (Bill).

Survived by her sister Kathy and brother Doug (Fran). Barb will be fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family, former colleagues, students, neighbours, and close friends.

Barbara grew up in the Sarnia/ Point Edward area and moved with her parents and three younger siblings to Toronto during her high school years to attend the largest secondary school in Canada at the time, Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute.

Barb graduated from Toronto Teachers’ College in 1966 and then entered the teaching profession. Her career in the Durham District School Board began at College Hill Public School. After marrying Louis and starting their life together in Oshawa in 1968, Barbara went on to hold a variety of teaching roles in the DDSB, then dedicated a number of years to raising their family.

After returning to full-time teaching in the late ‘80s, she retired from E.A. Fairman Public School in 2007 as a Special Education Resource Teacher, a role tailored to Barb’s skills and passions, and one at which she excelled and absolutely cherished.

Barb will be remembered as a fierce opponent on the pickle ball court, a worthy rival at the Bridge and Mahjong tables, a theatre lover and ballet patron, a lover of books, arts and culture, a dedicated educator and mentor, a fervent crocheter, a vintage vendor, a member of the Oshawa Seniors’ Community Centre and Durham Central PROBUS Club, former “arm candy” to Louis at Motor City Car Club events, a lover of trivia and word puzzles, a lifelong learner and teacher, and one of the “ladies who lunch.”

She will be missed for her boundless energy, tenacious spirit, pragmatic nature, beautiful smile, and infectious laugh.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 24th at the Jubilee Banquet & Conference Centre at Lakeview Park, in Oshawa.  There will be a drop-in from 2-5pm, with some brief remarks to commemorate Barbara’s life, starting at 3pm.  There will also be an on-site opportunity to make a contribution to Crohns’ and Colitis Canada, and leave with a handmade keepsake created by Barb (cash only).

We look forward to getting together to share some wonderful memories and stories, and to commemorate Barbara’s legacy.

The family would like to sincerely thank the nursing and medical staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and the RS McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, with special gratitude and appreciation for the staff on C7 who cared for Barb with such kindness and compassion in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Barbara’s name to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada or Lakeridge Health, Oshawa
