It is with great sadness, but also thankfulness for a long life well lived, that we announce the passing of our Mother, Helen, three months shy of her 98th birthday.

Helen was born August 9, 1924, in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands to Johannes Vanderzwet and Adrianna Van Klink.

Beloved wife of the late John Vandermeer (d. 1998) for 50 wonderful years.

Proud and loving mother to Marinus (d. 2018) (Cathy), Mary Newman (Earl), John (Alice-Faye), Gary (d. 2004) (Sue), Carl (Joy d. 2016), Greg (Tammy), Jane Mazzotta and Rick (Karen).

Wonderful Oma to 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by grandson Mark (2008).

Loving sister of Gerard (deceased), Nel Jawny (Harold, deceased), John and his wife Anne (both deceased), Wilma Kryger (deceased) and her husband John, Cathy and her husband Carl Slierings (both deceased), Nancy Mazzochi (Philip, deceased), Sophia Hroncich (deceased) and her husband John and Frank and his wife Lynda.

Loved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Immigrated to Canada in January 1954, with her husband John and four children after WWII.

They were then blessed with four more children in Canada.  Mom was a volunteer for St. John’s Ambulance and was custodian for the Oshawa Catholic School Board.

She enjoyed many hobbies, knitting, quilting, stained glass cutting and creating, puzzling, just to name a few.

She loved visiting the casino with her sister Nel, and also enjoyed “Ladies Night” with her sisters as well as vacations in Florida.

She loved spending time with family and friends.

Please join us for visitation on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at  ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME (124 King St. E., Oshawa) with Prayers during visitation.
