THORNTON, John Arthur (Art)   -  Former Beaverton resident, John Arthur (Art) Thornton (1921-2022) was granted his angel wings on December 21st, 2022, passing peacefully in his sleep at Woods Park Retirement Home, located in Barrie Ontario.

Born October 11th, 1921 in Hamilton Ontario, Art is survived by his children David and Patricia, his grandchildren Dennis, Fiona and Ryan, multiple great grandchildren and his nephew Peter Laughren.

Preceded in death by his parents James and Margaret Thornton and his sister Margaret Laughren of Hamilton and loving wife of over 50 years, Josephine (Jo).

Art could accomplish anything he set his mind to. He excelled in all kinds of sports, and practised tirelessly to become an accomplished golfer.

Upon retiring from Tele-Direct, he and Jo moved from Willowdale to the small town of Beaverton to enjoy the good life. Wintering at their home in Bradenton, Florida allowed them the opportunity to golf year round, while enjoying travel to places like Ireland, Europe and a favorite trip to Sedona.

Art served in WWII with the navy in the RCNVR, aboard the HMS Annan, pennant number K404, a river-class frigate built in Aberdeen, Scotland for the Royal Navy and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy.

He will be remembered by family and friends for his quick wit and amazing sense of humour.

A Celebration of Life will take place in the spring of 2023 at the Legion in Beaverton.

If so desired memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
