HARGREAVES, Derek Leslie Hargreaves  –

July 9, 1946 to April 9, 2023

After a three-year, hard fought battle with aggressive prostate cancer, Derek passed away at the Ross Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, in Lindsay, Ontario, with his devoted wife at his side.

Beloved husband and best friend to Penny (nee Piper) for 56 years and long-time friend for 64 years.

Cherished and much-loved father to Kevin (Wendy), Susan and loving grandfather (Papa) to Kyle and Lucas Remmer.  Son of the late Leslie and Dorothy Hargreaves and loved brother to Donna (Don) Ditchburn.

Derek was the loved brother-in-law to Michael (Carol) Piper, Bob (Catherine) Piper, Pat (Wendy) Piper, Jackie (Dave) Bryan, the late Rick Piper (2022) (Pat) and Cathy (Ian) Redpath.  Loving uncle and great-uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Special friend to many.

Derek was an electrician with the IBEW Local 353 for over 50 years and a teacher with Emery Collegiate at the North York Board of Education for 27 years.

Nothing else mattered to him, family was everything.

Our family is grateful for the wonderful care and treatment received from the staff at Ross Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Wing in his final days.  They are truly angels.

“I will love you forever, until my last breath” – Penny

Visitation will be held Friday, April 14th at the Mount Lawn Funeral Home in Whitby from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15th at 4:30 p.m. Reception to follow.

If you feel compelled, flowers are welcome, or donations can be made in tribute of Derek, to The Cancer Research Society.
