Peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at her home, at the age of 90.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph and son Taras (Carolyn). Loving mother of Mark (Marusia) and Stefan (Sylvia). Cherished grandmother of Fr. Alex, Adrian, Larissa, Nadia, Oksana, Mila, Tanya, Derek, and Gregory, and great-grandmother of Osanna and Meletiy. Dear sister of surviving sibling Lillian Cunningham. Lifelong friend of Helga Mayer and her daughter Vera Horsman.

Catherine cherished her roots and maintained strong connections to family in Scotland as well as to her husband’s family in Ukraine. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her extended family and friends in Canada and Scotland.

Family was the biggest part of Catherine’s life, known by many as “Granma.” She was especially involved in her grandchildren’s lives, providing unwavering care, teaching them valuable life lessons, offering constant support, and showering them with love. Her dedication to family was evident in every aspect of her life. Her strength and spirit were inspirational, and she was respected and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A private family service will be held at Armstrong Funeral Home, Oshawa. If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Alice Anita Joann Fice

Wednesday, February 12th, 2025

Passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, surrounded by family at Hastings Centennial Manor LTC, Bancroft. Alice, in her 89th year, was predeceased by her beloved husband Morley in 1981.

Beloved mother of Tom Fice (Judy), Alice Patterson (Jeff), Marion Grendel (Dave), Doris McKay (Glenn), Anita Fice (Gary), and Joel Fice (Angie). Proud grandmother to 16 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 20 great-grandchildren.

Dear sister of Harold Hart and Tom Hart (Gail).

Alice was a devoted mother who loved cooking, baking, and spending time with her family. She cherished visiting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always ensuring special family gatherings with themed meals and treats. She enjoyed crocheting, singing, dancing, crafts, playing the piano, puzzles, gardening, and board games. Alice was also a dedicated caregiver to her husband, parents, and others in need. In her later years, she especially appreciated the Recreation Program at her long-term care home.

Alice will be lovingly remembered by her family, extended family, and friends for her beautiful blue eyes, joy-filled smile, and her infectious, recognizable laugh.

Interment: Mt. Lawn Memorial Gardens, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby, Ontario.

Joanne Frances Morton (Riches)

March 31st, 1934 – February 16th, 2025

Passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 16th, after a short illness, at the age of 90 years. Cherished daughter of the late William and Christine Riches (nee: Parker). Beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Morton, who predeceased her after 67 years of marriage.

Proud mother to daughter Dianne Halliday (predeceased) and mother-in-law to Wayne Halliday (predeceased). Caring grandmother to Laurian and Lesley Halliday (Craig). She was also promoted to Great-Grandmother in August 2024 when Harper Hinton joined the family. Joanne will be greatly missed by her dear friends Linda, Carm (Roger), Cindy, and Diane, along with many other friends and extended family.

A special “thank you” to the amazing Nurses, PSWs, and Doctors at Centenary, Scarborough General, and Oshawa General hospitals for their outstanding care and kindness.

Cremation to take place, and a small private service for family and close friends will be held in the Spring. Future interment at Duffin Meadows Cemetery in Pickering. In lieu of flowers, a donation to any charity that cares for or protects animals would be greatly appreciated.

Maria Elizabeth Zak

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Elizabeth Zak on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Oak Ridge’s Hospice in her 89th year.

Beloved wife of the late Ludvik Zak. Loving mother of Ann (Kevin) and Maria, and cherished grandmother of Paulina and Sophie. Predeceased by her brother, Stefan, in Slovakia.

Born in Slovakia, Maria immigrated to Canada 58 years ago, bringing with her a deep love for her homeland and its rich traditions. She proudly maintained her Slovak heritage, passing down the language and culture to her children and grandchildren.

She was a former employee of Extendicare. Maria was a kind and generous soul, always ready to lend a helping hand.

A devout Catholic, she was a dedicated parishioner of St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 40 years. Her faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother were central to her life.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff and volunteers at Oak Ridge’s Hospice for their care and support.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church in Oshawa on Wednesday, February 19th at 10:30 AM, followed by interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Whitby.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oak Ridge’s Hospice or St. Gertrude’s Parish, Oshawa.

David Michael Behan

Tuesday, February 11, 2025

Passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, with his family by his side at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Dave fought a courageous battle with cancer and other health issues for many years. He was in his 69th year and leaves behind his cherished wife of 45 years and best friend, Jean.

Predeceased by his parents Violet and Aloysius Behan. Dear brother of Darlene Behan and Donna Carson. Loved brother-in-law of Linda Wilson (Nyle), Susan Maschke (Dann), Shirley Davis (Greg), and Jay Landry, and predeceased by Leonard, Laurie, and Ronald. Proud uncle and great-uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews. Dear friend and confidant of Reg Pigeau. Dave was a proud papa to his pets Jody, Bear, Rocky, Buddy, and Kiki. Lovingly remembered by his many extended family members and friends.

A proud retiree after 33 years of service to the City of Toronto as Head of Animal Control, Dave was a tremendous protector of animals in both his professional and personal life. He was also a proud member of AA and was preparing to receive his 10-year medallion.

Dave and Jean loved spending time at their home in Florida over the years. They enjoyed traveling and had plans to explore more in their retirement, but his health prevented those trips. They were overjoyed to move into their new home at Bloom Retirement, where they made new friends and participated in many activities. Family and friends were the most important treasures in Dave’s life.

Please join the family for a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home (124 King Street East, Oshawa). Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Memorial donations to Team Chelsea Animal Rescue or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Peacefully passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, at the age of 88.

Beloved husband of the late Stella. Loving father of Susan (Gord) Sirrs, Richard (Cindy) Parker, Steve (Patricia) Badurina, and Lisa Badurina. Cherished grandfather of Ashley (Brandon), Jacob (Amanda), Jessica (Nick), Sarah, and Piper, and great-grandfather of Mason, Layla, Evan, Georgia, Kane, and Mila. Dear brother of Rudy (Sophie), Mario, and Ozana.

Predeceased by his parents Ivan and Maria Badurina.

Eugene will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was a true family man who enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, sharing stories.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home (124 King St. E., Oshawa), with Prayers at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

Passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Kingston General Hospital, at the age of 76.

Predeceased by her husband Joaquim Miranda. Loving mother of Sandra Ruas (the late Ramiro), Rosemary Whelpdale, and the late Rosa Maria. Loved Avó of Stephen (Jessica), Valentina, Toni, Cody, and Dylan (Shannon). Bisavó of Kaiden, Ezekiel, Harmony, Adison, Hayden, Alexis, and Austin.

Predeceased by her parents Antonio Ribeiro and Amalia Maria (nee Roberto) and her brother Josue Ribeiro. Dear sister-in-law of Fatima and Antonio Jose Miranda (Manuela).

Souzel will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all of her family and dear friends in Canada and Portugal.

Lionel Hartley Kelly

1940 - February 4, 2025

Entered into rest at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in his 85th year.

Dearly loved husband for 61 years of Donna Kelly (née Brady). Cherished father of Shane Kelly (Beth), Derek Kelly (Liz), and Megan Amisson. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren William Kelly (Jennifer), Hanna Alati (Josh), and Parker and Leif Amisson, as well as his dear great-granddaughter Kensie Amisson and his beloved fur baby, Sara.

Lionel was the son of the late Bessie (née Prout) and Percy Kelly. He was predeceased by his brothers Bert Prout and David Kelly, his sisters Helen Ogle and Gwen Stewart, and his nephews John and Robert Kelly. He is survived by his sister-in-law Janet Kelly, nephews David and Steven Prout (Grace), and remembered by his extended family, including brother and sister-in-law Jim and Joan Brady, his late brother and sister-in-law David and Michele Brady, his late brother-in-law Mark Maly, and surviving sister-in-law Joan Maly. He is also remembered by his late brother-in-law Brian Brady, surviving sister-in-law Adrienne Brady, and brother and sister-in-law Terry and Susan Brady, along with many nieces and nephews.

Lionel dedicated 35 years to education as a teacher and principal for the Durham Catholic District School Board, a role he considered both an honour and a privilege.

Passionate about sports, Lionel played various sports in his younger years and was a proud member of the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame. He also refereed basketball and was an avid supporter and "armchair coach" of the Oshawa Generals, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Buffalo Bills.

A man of faith, Lionel was a Past Grand Knight and a dedicated member of St. Gregory’s Knights of Columbus.

Carol “Janice” Barclay

December 20, 1949 - February 6, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Carol "Janice" Barclay, who departed this world on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Hospital in Oshawa, surrounded by her loving family.

At the age of 75, Janice leaves behind her devoted husband of 57 years, John N. Barclay of Lake St. Peter, Ontario. She was a beloved mother to Andrew Barclay (Beverley Barclay) of Orillia and Tammy Desroches (Shane Nixon) of Courtice. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren: Mackenzie (Brad Harper), Mitchell (Emily Barclay), Conner Desroches, and Summer Desroches, as well as her great-grandchildren Brooks, Calvin, Scotlyn, and Sierra.

Janice is also survived by her siblings, Steven (Merna Barbaric) and Maryann (Joe Yurchi), and was predeceased by her dear parents, Stephen and Mary Barbaric.

Janice’s dedication to her profession as a nurse spanned 32 years at Oshawa General Hospital (now Lakeridge Health - Oshawa). After her initial retirement, she continued to serve the community at ParaMed in Bancroft for over a decade. Even during the challenging times of the COVID pandemic, Janice selflessly stepped up to assist in testing and vaccinations until her final retirement in March 2024. Sadly, she fell ill shortly after and passed away from this illness on February 6, 2025, at 1:00 a.m.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Armstrong Funeral Home Ltd. in Oshawa, Ontario. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place, with burial to follow at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Janice's unwavering commitment to her family and her community will forever be remembered.
