Charles William “Charlie” Liberty

1939 – 2025

Charles William “Charlie” Liberty, a beloved resident of Wabash, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the age of 85. A dedicated farmer, husband, father, and grandfather, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

At Charlie’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Badder Funeral Home & Reception Centre in Dresden, Ontario, on January 16, 2025.

Donations in his memory may be made to Wabash United Church, the Dresden Legion, or the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation.

Gary Bobolia

1957 - 2024

Gary Bobolia, formerly of Dresden, passed away unexpectedly in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at the age of 67.

Born in Chatham, Gary was the son of the late Joe and Betty Bobolia. Beloved husband and best friend of Karla (Lawrence) Bobolia. Loving father of Sheri Dunlop, Sara Jacques, and Christopher VanHumbeck. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Keegan, Colten, Maddison, Sophia, and Charlie, and by his sister Wendy Primeau (Mike).

Gary worked for many years as a millwright at the Canadian Canners in Dresden and will be remembered for his dedication to his family and friends. He was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Jack and Yvonne Lawrence.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at the Dresden Legion, 180 St. George St. N., on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. There will be finger foods and a cash bar.

Myrna "Mickey" Jean Smith

February 14, 1932 - November 30, 2024

With love and cherished memories, the family of Myrna “Mickey” Jean Smith announces her peaceful passing on November 30, 2024, at the kind and caring Lambton Meadowview Villa in Petrolia, Ontario. Born on Valentine’s Day in 1932 to Lucinda and John MacDonald in Sarnia, Mickey lived a life filled with love, family, and generosity.

Mickey was the loving mother of Laurie MacLean and Marla Veenstra (MacLean) and a devoted grandmother to Matthew and Joel Veenstra. She was fondly known as Grandma "Mick" to Charlene "Charlie" Mehlenbacher and was a dear aunt to several nieces and nephews. Mickey was predeceased by her second husband, Robert "Bob" Smith (1999), her parents, all eleven of her siblings, son-in-law Jim Veenstra (2017), and several nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside interment will be held at the Dresden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice in Mickey’s memory.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Badder Funeral Home, Dresden.

Memorial for Kathleen Margot Kiar

Kathleen "Kitty" Margot Kiar

1927 - November 21, 2024

Kathleen (“Kitty”) Margot Kiar, a resident of Chatham and formerly of Dresden, ON, Bainsville, ON, Shawinigan, QC, and Saint John, NB, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Copper Terrace Long Term Care in Chatham at the age of 97. Kitty lived a remarkable life full of love, creativity, and service.

Born in Saint John, NB, to the late Thomas and Mary Ann (Smith) McMenamon, Kitty was predeceased by her beloved husband Ole Kiar (2016) and her son Peter (1995). She is survived by her loving children Wendy Kiar, Stuart Kiar (Katherine), and Ian Kiar (Stephanie Shinkoda); her grandchildren Alexander Kiar (Elizabeth), Kazu Kiar, and Elsa Kiar; and her sister-in-law Marie Kiar. Kitty will be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews.

Kitty was predeceased by her siblings William Kermack McMenamon (Kay), Mary Marshall (Hal), Patrick McMenamon (Carm), James McMenamon (Catherine), Rosemarie Marchant-Smith (John Harry), Edwin McMenamon, and by in-laws Palle Kiar (Marie), Bitten Thompson (Allan), and Liane Smith (Gerry).

A graduate of Mount Allison University, Kitty began her career as a teacher. In Shawinigan, QC, she became a vibrant part of the community, directing school choirs, musicals, and productions. Kitty’s progressive social conscience, passion for politics, love of literature, and exceptional culinary skills left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Kitty continued to embrace life well into her senior years, playing tennis until almost 90 and excelling at Scrabble, bridge, and music, mastering the flute later in life. Her energy, wit, and warmth will be remembered fondly by friends and family.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service celebrating Kitty’s life will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Badder Funeral Home, with refreshments to follow. Interment will occur at a later date. A livestream of the service will be available for those unable to attend.

Tommy "Tom" Henry Blommaert
1956 - 2024

Tommy "Tom" Henry Blommaert, a resident of Dresden, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Windsor Regional Hospital at the age of 68. Born in Chatham, he was the son of the late Louis and Irma (Van Damme) Blommaert. Tom is survived by his daughters, Bailee Sacerty (Garrett) and Nicole Coles (Brandon), and their mother, Kathleen Betts (Kipp). He was a proud grandfather to Quinn, Callie, Alaina, and Alivia. He is fondly remembered by his dear friend Cathy Dewagner, as well as his sisters-in-law, Joanne Blommaert and Carol (Blommaert) Simpson. Tom will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his brothers, Richard, Willy, and Henny, and sisters, Emmy Ide (Jerome), Nellie Hinks, and Ann Blommaert, along with his niece, Brenda Ide Schaffer, Tom leaves behind a legacy of love for his family, especially his granddaughters. He enjoyed playing cards, particularly euchre and poker, and loved hosting poker nights with his friends. Tom also took pride in keeping his yard immaculate and enjoyed spending time with Cathy, going for drives, and watching movies.

He worked for Eatons in Wallaceburg for 28 years, followed by stints at Martinrea, Penske, Bob’s Produce, and Dresden Meat Packers. Tom was a long-time member of the Dresden Legion and served as Bar Steward until his retirement. His quick wit and caring nature will be remembered by all who knew him, as will his love for hockey, Pepsi, and lemon pie.

Cremation has taken place, with interment to follow at a later date in Dresden Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 113 on Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 1-4 p.m. Donations in memory of Tom may be made to Lupus Canada or the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 113, Dresden.

Aart Wagter
1946 ~ 2024

Aart Wagter, a beloved resident of Wallaceburg, Ontario, passed away peacefully at London Health Sciences Centre, Victoria Campus, on Friday, October 11, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Holland, Aart was the son of the late Alte and Gerritje (Zoet) Wagter. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Aart was the cherished husband and best friend of Kelly (Henry) Wagter, and a proud father to Elaina Millson (Ken), Krista Martens (Greg), and Kerri Tarr. He was the adored grandpa of Braydn, Elliott, Jaclyn, Leah, Dawson, and Nolan. Aart was also a dear brother to Nelgje Officer, Johanna Werkman (Menno), and Gerry Wagter (Joy), and is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Rene Wagter.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Aart’s Life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory to Pet and Animal Wildlife Rescue "PAWR" (c/o 405 Park Ave E, Chatham, ON N7M 3W4) would be appreciated.
