HENRY, Vasil Edwardson Henry - Tuesday, December 9th, 1941 - Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024
Surrounded by his loving family, Vasil Edwardson Henry, formerly of Stratford, Ontario passed away on September 3rd, 2024, in Whitby, Ontario, after a long fought battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Vasil was a devoted father to Jason (Kim) and Patrick (Megan), and a proud "Papa," to Emerson, Clara, and Ronan. Predeceased by his long time partner Anne Stairs and beloved by her children and grandchildren. He is deeply missed by his siblings including Serene and Kathleen, nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends.
Born in 1941 on the island of Antigua, Vasil was the second youngest of a large family. From a very early age, he earned the affectionate nickname "Husband" for his constant willingness to help those around him. He fondly recalled his youth, frequently sharing tales of wandering the island for days at a time, savoring solitude and his connection to nature. These traits so evident in his youth would remain the rest of his life and manifested in his generosity of time, energy, and spirit; his love of nature, and being close to it; the strength to set out on an uncertain path and accept the struggles that may come. At age 21, he left Antigua with just two American quarters in his pocket, bound for the University of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In 1968, Vasil emigrated to Canada to continue his studies at McMaster University before attending Teacher’s College in Stratford. It was there that he found his true calling in teaching, spending the largest portion of his career teaching Fourth Grade at Bedford Public School. He believed in nurturing every child’s potential to learn, create, and succeed. He saw education not merely as imparting knowledge but as encouraging each child’s innate creativity, imagination, and curiosity. He had a strong sense of justice, especially for children and recognizing them as inherently innocent and deserving of respect.
Those who experienced Mr. Henry's class left the school year with lasting memories of a one-of-a-kind educator who brought joy to the classroom, maybe breaking into song while drumming on an overturned bucket. Without fail, he would remember his former students by name, even if twenty years had passed between meetings. More than once, a former student from many years ago would reach out to say thank you, or ask advice, or to share an accomplishment that they felt Mr. Henry had helped them achieve, even if indirectly, through the quality of the experience they had in his classroom.
Vasil passed his love of science and nature to his children. When they were young, he would take his sons out collecting Monarch caterpillars, keeping them in Milkweed filled jars until the time came to gather round and watch as the butterflies emerged. Later he would build a dove coop in the family’s backyard and breed mourning doves, with the only goal to see them grow, and then to fly away.
His love for golf cannot be overstated, and for decades you could find him teeing off at sunrise at the Stratford Golf and Country Club. He listened to classical music and read old poems. He understood life’s simple pleasures, and when he smiled, which was often, you would see pure joy in his eyes.
There will never be another like him. Wander on, until we meet again and call each other by name.
For those wishing to celebrate his life please make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Huron Perth.

Yvonne Josephine (Ruthie) Baker was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She left this world on August 7, 2024 at the age of 85 in Oshawa, ON.
She was born to Gertrude and Walter Baker on September 28, 1938 in Exeter, England and immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1959. She chased her singing and piano playing aspirations with the Salvation Army. Anyone who knew Yvonne, knows she had the voice of an angel, even producing a gospel album called “Everlasting Life”.

Along with her six grandchildren: Michael, Raquel, Madison, Josiphine, Courtney and Caleb. And six great grandchildren: Charlotte, Lily, James, Michael, Aaron and Florence.
Yvonne loved spending time with her grandchildren, singing, reading her bible, knitting, and being with her numerous pets over the years. She was a skilled piano player who would always gravitated towards the nearest piano to display her talents.
Yvonne loved Jesus, and it gives us peace to know she is reunited with her two brothers, bossing them around no doubt.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 4:30pm on Thursday, August 15 at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home. 5295 Thickson Rd N, Whitby, ON.

On August 2nd, 2024, the world got a bit dimmer as we said goodbye to the twinkle-eyed smile of our dad and husband, David Ross Robinson, aka Grizzly or Griz, of Oshawa ON (though Greenbank at heart).
David was born on October 5th, 1949 in Toronto to James and Vera Robinson. He spent is childhood in Downsview with older brother John, younger sister Carol (Jim Van Duzen). His quick wit and desire to make others laugh helped him form many life-long friendships.
In 1969, Dave met “Janny Sue” who became his wife in 1971. The young couple started married life in Toronto where David worked at IBM. After the birth of their two children, Craig T. and Amanda K., they moved from the big city to Dave’s dream home in Greenbank. Here, Dave and Janice raised their children and lived for 36 years.
Dave’s early years in Greenbank saw him volunteering for community activities, most notably Saturday Morning Movies, Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween parties, and chaperoning camping trips with Scouts and the Greenbank United Church. While Dave didn’t dance, he enjoyed many trips with the Step in Time Cloggers, deciding to hone his hunting skills; Bargain Hunting. If there was a bargain to be found, Dave would track it down. Always creative, Dave threw energy into many outlets including photography (53 rolls of film from western travels), illustrations, or carving either wood or soapstone.
Amanda and husband David Slonim gave “Pops” two wonderful grandchildren, Ruby and Desmond, whom he adored. He earned the affectionate nickname of “Grandpaparazzi”. Dave retired from IBM after 32 years of service. Dave and Jan enjoyed their travels with family to Israel, Disney World, Alaska, Arizona, California, and multiple trips to Hawaii.
Dave is predeceased by both of his parents and his sister Carol. He is survived by wife Janice Robinson, children Craig Robinson and Amanda and David Slonim, grandchildren Ruby and Desmond, brother John, in-laws Jim, Nancy & Marvin, Lars & Kathy, Bruce & Connie, 12 nieces and nephews, their children, and innumerable life-long friends.
Dave will be greatly missed by those who knew him. A celebration of life at a later date is currently being planned.

Beloved John (João) Campos, 69, passed away on August 17th 2024, after a long illness.
John was born on February 20, 1955 in the small gold mining village of Minas de Jales, Trás-os-Montes, Portugal. He was born to Ana Augusta da Costa Chacatas de Campos and João Brito Fabião de Campos. John also had an older brother, Luis de Campos, who predeceased him in 2012. John moved to Africa with his family to the city of Beira, Mozambique at the tender age of 4.
John met Madalena as a teenager in Mozambique, and upon returning to Portugal in the mid 1970’s together they had two children; Tiago and Joana.
In 1991, John moved to Canada, where he would eventually settle in the town of Whitby, Ontario. Over the next 30 plus years, John would study and work a variety of jobs and careers, always aiming to provide for and support his children, who moved to join him in Canada in 1993. His work included roofing, driving, trade-shows, graphic design, printing and the construction supply industry.
Throughout his life, John enjoyed spending time with friends, listening to music, reading philosophy, riding motorcycles, windsurfing, watching auto racing, among other things. He would speak often of how he missed the African sunsets of his youth.
Most of all, John treasured his children, their spouses Kelly and Kevin, and in the past 2 decades his grand children: Sofia (20), William (17), Isaiah (16), Grace (15), Julia (15), and Benjamin (8). He was happiest of all surrounded by family, sitting by the pool on a sunny day. John loved his nephews Luis and Ivo and his niece, Lara, and their extended families.
After pondering his beliefs most of his life, John proudly became a believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized in the summer of 2023, alongside his grandson, Isaiah. John developed an enviable dependence on God and forged strong connections and beautiful friendships with his church community.
Services will be held at Renaissance Baptist Church of Brooklin on August 30th at 11:00am with a luncheon following. Visitation will be held from 10:00am-11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oak Ridges Hospice of Durham, in Port Perry, who were so instrumental in providing great care and comfort in John's last days, as they do for so many others and their families.
