Jason Smith

1967 - 2024

It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Jason at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) on Monday, December 23, 2024. Devoted and proud father of Oliver and Winston. Beloved son of the late Laura Wallace (née Skinner) and William Wallace (late Jean). Brother of the late Charlotte Bisier and the late Patti Smith. Uncle of Kyle Bisier (Alyshia) and great uncle of Owen and Vada. He will be fondly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Jason loved the outdoors, hiking, biking, skiing, fishing, and hunting. He especially enjoyed taking the boys on many adventures. He cherished every opportunity to travel, explore, and continually learn. Jason was a skilled journeyman millwright at Algoma Steel and a savvy entrepreneur running Smith’s Yardpro. Mostly, he will be remembered for always showing kindness and compassion to people around him, helping out whenever he could.

Special thank you to lifelong friends Dean and Chris for the final bike tour and all their support and care. Jason was proud to be of Anishinaabe ancestry and was given the name Misko Miigwan through an Ojibwe ceremony.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road) on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a time of sharing taking place at 3:00 p.m. Interment to follow. Lena Barone

1938 – 2024

It is with broken hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Lena, at the Sault Area Hospital on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 86. Beloved wife of Antonio for 67 years. Adored mother of Marlene Waud and Frank Barone (Candace). Proud Nana of Lauren Milliken (Craig), Ryan Waud (Nathanielle), Sarah Barone (Dustin), and Anthony Barone. Great Nana of Dean, Sam, Koa, and Rio.

Predeceased by her parents Emelia and Sam Sicoly. Special sister of Gloria Meraglia (James). Cherished Aunt of Linda Quevillon, Wendy Meraglia, and Janine Meraglia. Lena will be deeply missed by her many special friends and extended family. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her influence will continue to inspire us as we gather around the table, just as she taught us to do.

She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom she took immense pride in watching grow. She cherished every milestone, every moment of laughter, and every opportunity to share in their lives.

1947 – 2024

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Indiraben on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with illness.
Beloved wife of Mahendrabhai Ughadpaga. Cherished mother of Rakesh, Kamal (Zankhana), Ketan (Payal), Jigna (Hemantkumar).
Dear grandmother of Devanshi, Shivang, Aaditya, Manali, Vedant, Kritika, Mihit, and Nitya.

Her kindness, love, and strength touched the lives of everyone around her. She will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her warm heart, and the countless memories we shared.
She left us a legacy of love and blessings that will continue to shine brightly in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace now.

Stephen Moore

1955 – December 18, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Stephen Moore, surrounded by the love of his family, at the Sault Area Hospital on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the age of 69.

Beloved father of Matt (Laura) and Jana Charron (Jeff), Stephen was a proud grandfather to Ryan and Andrew Moore and cherished the companionship of his grandpups, Karma and Molly. He is predeceased by his parents, Bob and Marg Moore, and is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Susan Stone (Gene) and Mike (Fern). Stephen will also be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, and special friend, Heather.

Gary Kenneth Lowell "Kenny" Hagerman

1935 – 2024

With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Kenny at Extendicare Maple View on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the age of 89. Predeceased by his dear wife, Una. Cherished father of Ken and Peter. He will be lovingly remembered as “Pa” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Buck and Clara, and his sisters Nancy (late) and Norma (late). Survived by his brother Ron.

Kenny was the owner of Bickell Auto Parts, where he was known for his strong work ethic and great sense of humour. He valued the time spent with his family, work colleagues, customers, and friends. The Gros Cap gang always brought joy to his life. Special thanks to Chris Kelly for all the help over the years.

A celebration of Kenny’s life will be held in 2025. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District would be greatly appreciated.

Ernie Blanchette Sr.

1935 – 2024

It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Ernie, surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the age of 89. He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Joan. Devoted father of Ernie Jr. (Cathy), Monique Johnson (Victor), and Denise Moss (Neal). He will always be remembered by his adoring grandchildren, Bryan (Laura), Kevin (Danielle), Jessica, Jamie, and Stephanie (Robert). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Damian, who was the apple of his eye. Ernie will be fondly remembered as a fun-loving brother-in-law, uncle, and an amazing friend to many.

Family was the most important thing in the world to him. Any time his family gathered, whether it be for a birthday, a holiday, or an impromptu dinner, it was the best of times. Ernie was a proud employee of Algoma Steel Tube Division for 35 years before retiring in 1992. In the summer months, he could be found in his garden, where his green thumb provided many people with delicious vegetables. He spent many great years at Camp 55 with his buddies and his "little woman" Joan. At Camp 55, he caught countless fish and made cherished memories. He was an avid Soo Greyhounds fan and held season tickets for many years.

At Ernie’s request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful nurses and caregivers in the emergency department and on 3C at the Sault Area Hospital. Special thanks to Jennifer Hendrie, Dr. Schamp, Mary, and Lisa for their care and kindness.

Noel Mathieu

1934 – 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Noel, a remarkable man whose lasting mark on the world will forever resonate in the lives he touched. Noel departed this world on Monday, December 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. His legacy as an adoring husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pioneering builder, and passionate horse lover will continue to inspire and uplift us all.

Born on September 20, 1934, to parents Alfred and Cecile Mathieu, Noel’s journey through life was characterized by courage, compassion, and unyielding determination to follow his own path. He was the owner of Mathieu Bros. Construction, a prominent home builder in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas, as well as High Rail Stables, a horse boarding and training center. His dedication, empathy, and commitment earned him the respect and admiration of everyone he met.

Noel was predeceased by his wife, Yvette (2018), and leaves behind his children Anita (Bruce), Ronald (Pat), and Lise (Todd); grandchildren Matthew, Kimberly, Melissa, and Rachelle; and great-grandchildren Rena, Kiana, and Braxton. Noel also leaves behind many siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews who held a special place in his heart.

At Noel’s request, there will be no funeral services. Cremation has taken place, and he will rest next to his cherished wife. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) or Tracy’s Dream would be appreciated by the family. Please raise a glass and listen to a Tex Ritter song in celebration of a life well-lived and a man deeply loved.

Ruth Ten Brinke

October 10, 1957 – November 24, 2024

It is with the heaviest of hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth Ten Brinke. She passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital with her family by her side on Sunday, November 24, 2024, after a short but hard-fought battle. Ruth was 67 years old.

Ruth was the beloved wife of 47 years to her soulmate, Jack, and a cherished mother to Heidi LaBerge (Dan) and Kylie Turcotte (Robbie). She was a proud and loving Nanny to Maisie, Jackson, Molly, Hannah, and Elise, teaching them values of kindness, fun, and family traditions. Her love for her family was boundless, and her legacy will live on through her children and grandchildren.

Ruth is predeceased by her parents, Euena Grahl Madic and Kenneth Grahl. She is survived by her siblings Joan Guitard (Don), Deborah Blahey (late Nicholas), Vera Askew (Mike), Keith Grahl (Joan), and Bruce Grahl (Sylvie), as well as her in-laws Maria and the late Jochem Ten Brinke. Ruth was a dear sister-in-law, aunt, and cherished friend to many.

Ruth worked diligently throughout her career at Rio Algom in Elliot Lake, Prentiss & Carlisle Forest Management in Sault Ste. Marie, and as the Police Services Board Secretary for Sault Ste. Marie. Her dedication and hard work were matched only by her love of family, friends, and life’s simple joys.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor John Faulkner officiating. A private family interment at Sylvan Valley Cemetery will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Sault Ste. Marie in Ruth’s memory. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the ICU doctors and nurses at the Sault Area Hospital for their compassion and care during Ruth’s final days.

Albertus "Albert" Vanderloo

May 24, 1941 - November 20, 2024

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Albert Vanderloo gained his angel wings at the age of 83, with his eldest grandson by his side, at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH).

Albert will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Reta, also known as "Bubbles," and their three children: John (Heather), Susan McEwan, and Michael (Rachelle). A beloved grandfather, he leaves behind grandchildren Jayme McEwan, Johnny, Jesse, Chelsey McEwan, Deanna, Julie, Mitchell, and Cody. Albert is now reunited with his beloved grandson, Lance.

Born on May 24, 1941, in Son en Breugle, Netherlands, Albert was the son of the late Francisca and the late Antonios Vanderloo. One of six siblings, he is predeceased by Maria VandeMeirden (late Tony), Arnold Vanderloo (late Anita), Frank Vanderloo (Mary), and Annie Lee (Terry), and survived by his brother Anthony Vanderloo Jr. Albert was a cherished brother-in-law of Mary Ryckman (late Angus), late Robert MacPherson (late Gloria), and Brenda Odber (Fred). Loving godfather of Megan, he will also be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Albert's life was defined by hard work, beginning on his mother’s farm and continuing through his years at Algoma Steel, where he started at just 18. Alongside his career at Algoma Steel, he ran a construction company, moving and building houses. Even after retiring with over 37 years of service, Albert remained active, assisting his children with home projects and tending to his garden and hay fields.

In 2017, a serious burn injury marked a turning point in Albert’s life, yet he displayed remarkable resilience and returned home after a long hospital stay. Despite his battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease, Albert’s memory remains a testament to his strength, love, and devotion to family.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Helen Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorial donations to ARCH or the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie would be greatly appreciated by the family. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the ARCH angels and Dr. Nicole Apostle for their exceptional care and compassion.

Ronald "Ronnie" St. Denis

1935 - 2024

With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Ronnie on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in Sault Ste. Marie, at the age of 89 years.

Devoted husband of Fern for 68 years. Beloved father of Kim St. Denis-Hykel (Peter). Cherished Papa of Justin Hykel (Tianna) and Kaitlin Hykel (Nathan) and adoring Great-Papa of Sydney. Predeceased by his parents Alexander and Elsie St. Denis. Survived by his brother-in-law Brian Badelt (Joanne), and sisters-in-law Lynne Shand (Dave) and Wendy Gibson (Ron).

Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews Brad, Amanda, Brian Jr., Randi, Ryan, Riley, and Darcie. Predeceased by his sisters Leona Behrens (Thomas), Lauretta Steves (Doug), Joyce Diboll (Llyod), Barbara Lajoie (Roland), and survived by his sister Sandra Dore (Vic), along with numerous nieces and nephews in the St. Denis family.

Ronnie was a lover of animals, with a special passion for horses, which began in his teenage years. Alongside Fern and Kim, he built the family horse farm, S.D. Acres, sharing his love of equestrian pursuits with the community. He balanced this passion with a 42-year career at Algoma Steel, working in the Open Hearth and as a BOSP Crane Operator. After retirement, he continued to care for the farm, spending mornings on his tractor followed by coffee shop visits.
