Josef Braverman

July 8, 1938 – December 20, 2024

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Josef Braverman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Josef passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at the age of 86. He was deeply loved by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, on July 8, 1938, Josef immigrated to Israel in 1971 and later settled in Toronto, Canada, in 1985. He was a visionary and highly respected engineer in the plastics industry. As the founder of Jatan Plastics, he revolutionized road construction by designing durable road construction barrels and barricades still used across Canadian highways today. Josef's professional achievements earned him admiration and respect as a leader in his field.

Josef’s legacy extends beyond his professional contributions. He was a man of warmth, humor, intelligence, and kindness. He had a generous heart and was deeply devoted to his family, especially his two sons, Jack Braverman (Lisa) and Eitan Braverman (Katerina). He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Janetta Braverman, and a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Jessica, Natalie, Ryan, Joshua, Seth, Ezekiel, and Eden.

Josef was a true mensch—a man of integrity, compassion, and loyalty. He was a cherished friend to many, always offering a listening ear, thoughtful advice, or a good laugh. His ability to light up a room with his wit and charm will be deeply missed.

Josef is survived by his dear brother, Tuvia Braverman, and was predeceased by his beloved parents, Esther and Yacov Braverman.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. Following the service, the family will observe Shiva at the Braverman residence, 32 Loma Vista Dr., Thornhill, ON, where family and friends are welcome to gather to remember and celebrate his life.

She was a cherished Babushka to Lawrence (Brigette), Joseph (Kathleen), and Gabriela, and a proud great-grandmother to Wolfe and Dove. Simona will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Al (Zacaria) de Castro, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, on November 28, 2024, in Toronto, Canada, at the age of 89. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Al leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Known for his ambition and zest for life, Al earned the nickname “The Condo King of Toronto.” His adventurous spirit led him and his wife, Mimi, on travels across the globe, creating unforgettable memories. Al’s passion for food was unmatched, and he took great pleasure in savoring every meal while planning the next. His magnetic personality, charm, and infectious laughter made him the heart of every gathering.

Survived by his loving wife, Mimi, Al will be deeply missed by his three children: Dan, Cindy (Stephen), and Deanne; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Abigail (Azi), Leora (Mike), Zachary (Rachel), Alex (Laura), Liam, Jonah, Scarlett, and Emilia. His love and guidance will continue to inspire and comfort future generations.

Funeral services will be held at Steeles Memorial Chapel (350 Steeles Avenue West) on Friday, November 29, 2024, at 12:30 PM. The service will also be livestreamed at smclive.ca.

Shiva will take place at 2 Neptune Dr, #703, from 7-9 PM on Saturday, November 30, and continue from Sunday through Wednesday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
