Marion Miller

1926 – 2025

Peacefully, after a short illness, on Friday, February 7, 2025 at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, at age 99. Marion (née Robertson), beloved wife of the late Ross Miller of Sunderland.

Loving mother of Susan Miller and her partner Randy Knight of Dunsford, and Glenn Miller and his wife Maxine of Owen Sound. Cherished grandmother of Scott Miller and his wife Katrina of Brooklyn, New York. Dear sister of the late Ross Robertson and his wife Jean of Sunderland.

Marion spent 75 of her 99 years as a vibrant and dedicated member of the Sunderland community. She worked side by side with her husband Ross on the family farm while also holding a long-term position at CIBC. A lifelong athlete, Marion enjoyed a remarkable amateur baseball career that spanned four decades and was known as a fierce competitor.

She was an active and committed member of Sunderland United Church, particularly with the U.C.W., offering her helping hands to countless community events and initiatives. With Ross, she shared a love for sports—curling, lawn bowling, cycling, and golf—and cheered from the sidelines at countless baseball and hockey games.

Their adventurous spirit led them around the world, from flying to Australia and sailing above the Arctic Circle, to vanning across Canada and the U.S.A., always eager to explore and connect.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Marion Miller will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 10 Church Street North, Sunderland, on Friday, May 9th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A private interment will follow at Sunderland Cemetery.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s United Church, Sunderland or to a charity of your choice.

Thomas Lawrence Allison

September 13, 1944 - March 15, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved father and grandfather, Tom Allison, on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Tom is survived by his former wife, Catherine (nee Crowe), his five children: Jim, Bill (Christine), Andy (Heather), Nancy (Lorne), and Lawrence; and his eight grandchildren: Brooke, Abigail, Isaac, Erika, Lucas, Audrey, Miriam, and Hugh. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Gwendolyne (nee Lawrence) Allison of Dixie, Mississauga.

Tom graduated from the University of Guelph in 1968 with an Honours B.Sc. in Agriculture, and shortly after settled on a farm with Cathy near Manilla. He taught physics and science at Port Perry High School and quickly became involved in numerous community organizations such as the Sunderland Lions Club, Minor Hockey, the Co-op Board, and the Cannington Curling Club. He later returned to his trucking roots, founding his own business and working for over 30 years as a driver, making connections and sharing laughs with fellow farmers and friends along the way.

Tom was a pragmatic man who knew his own mind and enjoyed a great joke. He loved the freedom of driving, traveling across North America to visit historical monuments and every baseball stadium he could. An avid reader and devoted learner, his curiosity led him to interview everyone he met, always living by his motto: “If you don’t ask, you won’t know!” He embraced challenges, whether it was plowing a straight opening split or crafting a tidy crown. Above all, he was a proud and devoted supporter of his children's and grandchildren’s activities, always found rinkside, at the finish line, in the audience, or right behind home plate.

Tom’s presence will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his spirit will live on in our hearts and memories. Sincere thanks to the physicians, specialists, and hospital staff at Port Perry Hospital, Southlake Regional, Peterborough Regional, Lakeridge Oshawa, and Ross Memorial Hospital for their care.

As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation, the Durham Plowman’s Association, or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sunderland Legion on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

When dementia took hold in her final years, Bob lovingly cared for her at home while they continued to travel, dance, and enjoy good music. EATON, Mike Eaton

January 22, 2025

Passed away suddenly, but not unexpectedly, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at the age of 77. Mike is survived by his life partner, Brenda Warrington, as well as her children; Chantal, Danielle and Luke, and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Sylvia. Brother to David and Richard. Godfather to Barrett (predeceased), Aja, Kane and Heron.

Born in Jamaica and raised in West Hill, Mike became part of the 1960’s through 1980’s Toronto music scene, playing guitar and co-writing songs with John Carr. A Florist by trade, Mike worked with his Mom at her West Hill Florist shop, taking over operation of the business when she retired, eventually owning his own shop in Scarborough.

Mike’s peculiar, and often off-colour, sense of humour remained with him throughout his life, most recently entertaining and challenging the staff at Bon Air LTC in Cannington, to whom we are grateful for the care given, and kindness shown to Mike.

There will be no funeral. Mike will be laid to rest in St. Margaret’s-in-the-Pines Cemetery in West Hill. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.thornefuneralhome.ca
