José Da Ponte-Viveiros passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 31, 2024, at his home in Tillsonburg at the age of 94. Born on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, Portugal, José immigrated to Canada in 1954 with his beloved wife, Angelina (“Angela”) Da Ponte-Viveiros, who predeceased him in January 2024. Together, they raised two daughters, Lucy Mainville (Serge) and Edie Da Ponte (Kim Hutlet), and José was a proud grandfather to Nathan and Natalie Mainville.
José is survived by his sister, Irene Da Ponte, and will be fondly remembered for his quiet kindness, love of gardening, and unwavering dedication to family and faith. He was a long-standing member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Tillsonburg, where he found joy and strength in his faith. José worked diligently throughout his life, including 19 years with Livingston’s Industries in Tillsonburg and 7 years at Ford in Talbotville, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate José’s life and faith will be held on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 51 Venison St. W., Tillsonburg, officiated by Rev. Fr. Seejo John. Interment will follow in Tillsonburg Cemetery, with a luncheon in the St. Mary’s Church basement afterwards. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the “VON Sakura House Hospice” or “St. Mary’s Church” are welcomed. Condolences, memories, and donations may be shared at Verhoeve Funeral Homes.
