A Renaissance man – gifted across multiple domains
Skilled Sculptor | Passionate Painter | Powerful Tenor | Masterful Chef | Inspiring Teacher | Critical Historian | Free Thinker | Avid Reader | Frustrated Fisherman | Stymied Golfer | Stoic Stoic | Cheerful Patient | Patient Gardener | Follower of Jesus | Wonderful Friend
Stephen was born in Bokondini, Irian Jaya to missionary parents, Tom and Freda. He grew up in Toronto and Fort Erie where he developed a love for fishing, the visual arts and music. After attending Ontario Bible College, he received degrees in Fine Arts and Education from York University. Summers were spent at Fair Havens and Fair Glen youth camp, where he began many lifelong friendships and met his darling wife, Rachel.
Stephen had an impactful career which spanned three decades at the Durham District School Board as a visual arts teacher, facilitator and administrator. A talented musician and artist, nothing delighted him more than utilizing his gifts to enrich the lives of others and draw them to Jesus. An accomplished lyrical tenor, his expressive voice raised you up, whether performing with Canadian opera companies, symphonies, worship teams, or serenading fellow tourists along narrow European streets.
Stephenβs mind was expansive and creative. His love of theology, politics, culture and history, never far away. He led a humble and contented life amidst his garden, easel, sculpture stand and bookshelf. Never fearing emotion, nor affection, he was a loyal friend, devoted husband to Rachel, proud father to Luke (Emily) and Victoria, compassionate son of Tom and Freda, steadfast brother to Pauline and Philip and was joyously anticipating grandfatherhood!!
Above all, Stephen drew his strength and love from Jesus, and in Him led the selfless life which blessed us all.
Donations: In Stephenβs honour, donations may be made to The Leprosy Mission and Princess Margaret Foundation.
