HUNTER, George D. Hunter   –  (77) of Ottawa, Ontario, passed away on June 20, 2024. George was born to Lt. Col T. Murray and Phyllis Hunter on May 3, 1947.

After graduating from Rideau High School, he played football and studied political science and history at Carleton University before obtaining a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.

He went on to a distinguished career as a barrister culminating in his induction into the American College of Trial Lawyers and election as Treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario.

Beyond law, George loved hockey, coached several youth teams, and helped bring a men’s varsity program to Carleton. He was an avid student of history and politics, particularly as it concerned Canada and our role in the world.

A proud son of Ottawa, he combined his passion for hockey and history to bring a public monument commemorating Lord Stanley’s Cup to life, which now decorates the corner of Sparks and Elgin Street for all to appreciate. He loved animals (especially his boyhood cat, Ginger; dogs, Bruiser and Henry; and granddogs, Bob and Penny Lane).

Most of all, he loved people and lively debate, constantly writing op-eds and arranging telephone calls to discuss the latest political issues at home and abroad.

He is survived by his loving partner, Donna Correy; his children, son, Chris (Melanie) and daughter, Kelly; his brother, Malcolm; sister, Sandra Dodgson (Bruce); his many nieces and nephews; and Donna’s sons and family, Shane (Rachael) and Trent (Gillian and daughter, Margot).

A celebration of life will be held this summer with details to be shared at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ottawa Humane Society or the Paul Correy Memorial Fund
