LONG, James Charles - August 1, 1937 - December 19, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce Jim's passing.
Married 61 years to Gertrude (Ryan).
Dad to Michael (Lynne), daughter Michele and poppa to Hannah and Nathan.
Born in South Porcupine, ON, to Charles Newton-Long and Margaret (Nesbitt).
Brother to Ron (deceased) and Wayne Newton-Long (Glenna).
Retired from Bell Canada after 34 years at age 53. He enjoyed starting his own business, Gertrim Enterprises, and the many friends he met through it. When his daughter wanted to play softball, he became an umpire.
When she wanted to play hockey, he organized and convened Annunciation Church Hockey League for girls in Don Mills. It later became Toronto Aeros. He convened the organization for 13 years and coached a bantam select team.
After retiring, he moved to Whitby and became involved with the Whitby Seniors' Centre and organized the cribbage night for 25 years.
He also loved bowling and helped with it for 10 years. For 80 years he was active before illness slowed him.
With the Senior Centre closed because of COVID-19, he was unable to socialize and missed his friends. We will miss him and may he rest in peace.
Donations may be made to Durham Region Humane Society, Covenant House Toronto or Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
