MACLAURIN, Janine Elaine Gabrielle Maclaurin

MACLAURIN, Janine Elaine Gabrielle

July 4, 1988 – June 27, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Janine. Known by many as either “Pud” or “J9,” she was Anishinaabe and a proud member of Fort William First Nation.

Janine was born in Lindsay, Ontario, but moved home to Fort William First Nation before turning two. She attended St. Elizabeth School in Thunder Bay for a short time before moving to Heath Park Elementary and eventually Westgate High School. In the days since her passing, many friends have come forward to tell us about Janine’s kindness and generosity—something that rang true for anyone who knew her.

Janine had a deep love for animals. She regularly smuggled strays—and even some wild beasts—into our family home while growing up, resulting not only in funny stories but long-term family pets as well. Notable examples include our beloved dog Squid who lived with us for 14 years after Janine found him abandoned in a ditch, and a garter snake named Cecil that she hid in her closet while nursing it back to health.

Janine is survived by her parents Art and Mari Jo MacLaurin, siblings Damien, Becky, and Jake, nieces Krista and Heather, nephews Brett, Donald, Odin, Jarred, and Dax, and our little girl Elaine (otherwise known as Robin the Bird). She is predeceased by grandparents Geraldine and Donald MacLaurin, Elaine McMahon, and Jim Lee.

We would like to thank the kind staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre who cared for Janine in her last days; thank you for allowing us to be with her so that she did not have to die alone. Miigwetch to Fort William First Nation, Happy Time Tours, and various friends and family for your support during this hard time. We also say chi-miigwetch to Jeordi Pierre, Marlene Pierre, and Al Hunter for helping us make sure Janine made it to where she needed to go on the other side.

A Traditional Ceremony in honour of Janine was held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in her Community of Fort William First Nation. Those who wish to honour Janine’s memory are encouraged to donate to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or to adopt a pet in her name.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
