MARTIN, Peter – It is with great sadness and enduring love that we announce the passing of Peter Thomas Ross Martin on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the age of 83.
Pete passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.
Pete was married for 59 years to the love of his life, Wendy; and was a devoted father to his four children, Cindy (Bruce), Kristi (Brent), Pete (Michelle) and Jenny (Blair); and nine incredible grandchildren, Justin, Robbie, Katherine, Tyler, Alexa, James, Coleman (Aimee), Cameron and Drew.
Born and raised on a farm in Scarborough along with his three siblings, Pete held fond memories of his upbringing. He attended Winston Churchill Collegiate, where his storied football career began.
He went on to the University of Western Ontario, serving as captain of the football team. There he met his future wife, Wendy, as the coach of her hockey team.
Pete later went on to be a dedicated teacher and football coach at Port Credit Secondary School for 26 years, many of those years jointly playing in the CFL. He signed with the Toronto Argonaut Football Club in 1965 as an outstanding linebacker, playing for eight years, including a memorable appearance in the 1971 Grey Cup.
Pete retired in 1972 from playing, and in 1977, he became the voice of the Argos as the Radio Colour Commentator for close to 30 years. He continued his connection to the Argos as the Alumni Association President for many years. Pete was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame Media Wing in 2000, and recently named as an All-Time Argo in the Builders Category.
Our family is very thankful for the nurses and doctor, and those of Acclaim Health for their compassionate and supportive palliative care.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 30th, between 4 and 8 p.m. at Glen Oaks Funeral Home, 3164 Ninth Line, Oakville, Ontario. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, our family asks that if you would like to honour Pete that you consider performing a random act of kindness. Pete was known for his kindness and compassion towards others.
