Briiks NicholasBROOKS, Nicholas Elliott - We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our friend and neighbour on October 1, 2021.

Nick was a Clio award-winning veteran of Toronto’s film community. He was also an activist and a literal ground-breaker in the development of Toronto’s community garden and green scene.

He was a leader in the fight against a massive TTC parking lot project at the Greenwood Yards, and was involved in negotiations that saw the transit commission turn its green space into a public park with one of the city’s largest off-leash dog parks.

During his tenure as chair of his neighbourhood residents’ association, he and his beloved wife Kathryn oversaw the creation of a community garden and fruit orchard at the foot of the East End’s Oakvale Avenue - a green initiative that this year contributed more than 200 pounds of apples to food distribution services. Over the years, he advised other community groups on starting their own public gardens.

A colourful individual, immediately recognizable by his dyed beard, shorts and fondness for the colour red, Nick was politically active, and ran for Toronto mayor in 2006.

Nick is deeply missed by his friends, neighbours and colleagues, and especially by his sister, nieces, great nieces and great nephews in England where he was born. He was predeceased by Kathryn, who worked with him establishing Oakvale Green. His and Kathryn’s home was a social gathering place, open to friends and neighbours.

As per his wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Instead, to honour him, a Celebration of Life event is in the planning stages.
