In Loving Memory of Cornelia “Corry” Vandergaast Abma (née Koopmans)

September 16, 1931 – December 28, 2025

Corry Vandergaast Abma passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2025 to be welcomed home into God’s loving arms.

Born September 16, 1931, in Lemmer, Friesland, Netherlands, Corry later immigrated to Canada after marrying Gerrit Vandergaast on February 15, 1954. Together they raised six children: Wendy (Henry), Grace (Reg), Gelf (Hilda), John (Rita), Nancy (Bob), and Corrinne (Don). After Gerrit’s passing in 1972, Corry faithfully and courageously raised her family, trusting God, leaning on her extended family and friends and on her church community.

In 1990, Corry married Jelle Abma, with whom she shared nearly 25 happy years until his passing in 2014.

Corry was a devoted mother, loving grandma to 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, and cherished her family above all else. She leaves behind two sisters in the Netherlands, Aukje and Renskje.

A longtime member of Rehoboth Christian Reformed Church, Corry was known for her strong faith, joyful spirit, quick wit, and love of nature, laughter, and handwork. She lived independently into her nineties and passed peacefully surrounded by loving care.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. We take comfort in knowing she is resting peacefully in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior.

The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 1pm, at Rehoboth Christian Reformed Church, 130 Scugog Street, Bowmanville. A reception and time of fellowship will follow the service, and all are welcome to join the family.
