ACHTYMICHUK, Eddie William Achtymichuk

He was born on May 24, 1933, in Smoky Lake, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the age of 92 years, at Veterans Memorial Lodge, Broadmead Care, in Victoria, BC, after a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Eddie had a passion for life, his family, and helping others.  He had a long and distinguished career in the medical branch of the Royal Canadian Navy which took him to Victoria, BC in 1951, where he would later meet his future wife.  He was transferred to CFB Currie, in Calgary, AB in 1970, CFB Cold Lake, AB in 1974, and back to CFB Naden, in Victoria in 1977, where he retired in 1981.

Eddie was part of the CAF medical team at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, QB and led the medical team at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria.

He came from a family of passionate musicians which led him to take up playing the clarinet in his early years.  He was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed fitness training, indoor soccer, curling, and competitive squash.  In addition, he was an avid runner and placed third after completing the 1968 Naden 1000-mile challenge in less than a year.  Throughout his retirement years, Eddie enjoyed gardening, woodworking, travelling to Hawaii with his wife, brother John and spouse, and spending time with his children and their families.

Eddie was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Dilys (nee Roberts) in 2014, and his son Terry in 1976.  Mourning Eddie’s loss are his surviving children Pam (Warren) and Barry (Alana, predeceased), and his grandchildren, Terra, Mattix, and Jace.  Eddie will be sadly missed by his brother, Walter (Lesia), sister, Sonia (Peter), and numerous nieces and nephews.  Eddie was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Wasyl, as well as three sisters and nine brothers.

The family’s heartfelt thanks are extended to the exceptional staff at Veterans Memorial Lodge, Broadmead Care and Dr. Ted Rosenberg and staff.

In keeping with Eddie’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.  Memorial contributions may be made in Eddie’s memory to Veterans Memorial Lodge, Broadmead Care, 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria, BC V8X 4Y7.
