ALLEN, Ivan John Allen

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan Allen on January 13, 2026 at Spencer House in Orillia, Ontario, in his 91st year.

Ivan is survived by Nelda (née Morrow), his beloved wife of 68 years. He was a loving father to Sue (Mark Clayton), Barb (Steve Woodburne), Steve (Lesa), and Gord (Janet), and a cherished grandfather to Jocelyn, Kevin (Veronica), Mackenzie (Dave Mordak), Connor, Angela, Caileigh, Riley, Emily, and Trinity. He is also survived by his siblings Orval (Betty) and Elda (née Telford-Scott).

Ivan was born on February 11, 1935, in Englehart, Ontario, to the late Myrrill and Estella Allen (née Nelson) and was raised on his family farm. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1956, Ivan began a long and dedicated career in education. He taught mathematics at Markham District High School for six years. In 1963, he joined the North York Board of Education and held numerous leadership positions until his retirement in 1990. These included supervisor of mathematics, coordinator of professional development, and school principal and vice-principal.

Ivan resided in Markham, Ontario from 1957 to 1990 before moving to Brechin, Ontario.

Ivan and Nelda were childhood sweethearts and married in 1957. Together they raised four children and were deeply involved in the community. Ivan devoted much of his life to leadership within the United Church of Canada, both locally in Markham and Brechin and nationally at the General Council for the United Church of Canada.

Ivan had many interests. He and Nelda travelled extensively, seeing the world through multiple cruises as well as road trips across Canada and the United States. Ivan enjoyed the outdoors and spent many joyful summers camping and fishing in Algonquin Park and Madelaine Lake. He was a talented woodworker and photographer, and also took great pleasure in caring for his home and property. In the last few years, when mobility became a challenge, Ivan enjoyed daily outings around the neighbourhood in his golf cart, where he happily greeted neighbours and their dogs.

Ivan’s funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on April 11, 2026 at Brechin United Church, 3252 Ramara Road 47, Brechin, Ontario. Visitation will be held from noon to 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario or a charity of your choice.
